Apps and Privacy: An Ethics Case Study
Under the case study, the ethical problems related with public privacy and security is discussed
in reference with social networking app, Path. The social networking app, Path faced certain
controversy in relation with privacy and security of public as it turned out that the app transmit
unencrypted information to the servers which further threatens the privacy of servers and public.
Path identified its ethical issues when they seek the complaints from users as the users of the app
found their personal information such as contact number being transmitted to other servers
without any notification to the users. This ethical issue of Path is related with ICT as the
communication of users with both the technology and social networking sites are impacted under
the ethical issue of user privacy and security. Moreover the ethical issue of privacy and security
of user impact the working of ICT as this issue leads to the emergence of problems concerning
law, policy and ethics related to ICT and users safety. For efficiently carrying out ICT it is
required that the safety and privacy is undertaken with complete consideration in order to avoid
threat to the privacy and security of user or public connected with the communication technology
and social networking sites.
The ethical issue of privacy and security of public related with un-notified transmission of
personal information by the social networking app, Path could resolve through the application
certain appropriate ethical theories such as stated below:
Utilitarianism Ethical Theory: Under this theory the ethical decision related with the ethical
issue of privacy and security of users is developed on the basis of action’s consequences and
impact of the user behavior. This theory under the consideration of confrontation to achieve
consensus and its decision making process is dependent on potential outcomes, conflict related
with the ethical issues and measurement of ethics in decision.
Deontological Ethical Theory: Path under deontological ethical theory could seek strong ethics
related with public and this theory helps Path to resolve the ethical issue related with privacy and
security of user through identifying one’s duty to solve the issue and developing appropriate
decision to efficiently solving the issue.

Virtue Ethical Theory: This theory provides opportunities to Path to effectively deal with the
issue through seeking appropriate philosophical reasoning with ethics to discuss and select
suitable virtue for maintaining good relation with public and user.
Contract Ethical Theory: Under this theory, Path could resolve its ethical issue related with
privacy and security through establishing an agreement on moral and political rules and policies
which ensure the privacy and security of the users of the app.
Moreover the most suitable ethical theory for Path to resolve its ethical issue of privacy and
security of user is utilitarian ethical theory as this theory includes the concept of greatest good
for the greatest number and this theory helps Path to deal with its ethical issues on the basis of
actions consequences. Under this theory, Path could effectively deal with ethical issue and avoid
threats to the privacy and security of the users and public through developing significant decision
on the basis of the consequences of the actions prevailing.
The ethical situation that emerges due to the ethical issue of privacy and security of users and
security includes publication of the Path’s ethical issues related with transmission of unencrypted
information of user in journals and an apology announcement by the chief-executive for their
inefficiency for dealing privacy and security of users. Moreover the company faced the ethical
situation under which the company reached a settlement with Federal Trade Commission, the
company agreed to pay $800,000 fine to Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act for violation
of their policy, the company also deleted 3,000 accounts and submitted privacy audits for 20
years. Moreover the company accepted its fault and adopted different techniques to deal and
improve the technology of the company.
