ACTIVITY TITLE Safety measures and procedures for safe handling of
Air cargo
1. Explain the procedures for safe handling of Air cargo?
Handling Air Cargo is a tough job and this could be done through the follow up of the
processes, which makes the handling much more easy and relevant to the people who
are handling it. The procedure or the hierarchy of air cargo handling process could be
explained in the following manner.
The air cargo handling activities work in two different times, one is arrival and
the other is departure. The arrival witnesses receipt and the departure
witnesses’ dispatch. These two different timing activities carries two sub-
processes one is air cargo handling sub process- arrivals and the second is air
cargo handling sub process – departure (Brandt and Nickel, 2018).
The process involves airside and landslide activities on a simultaneous basis. To
wear the perfect kind of personal protective equipment holds paramount
importance to move cargo from one place to others. Equipments such as safety
helmets, safety shoes, safety harness and others should be used every time for

handling air cargos. To work without such equipment will put the passengers’ life
at the edge of immense risk. Another aspect, which needs to be considered, is
maintaining equipment followed by its checking for damage prior to its use.
Handling air cargos requires the utilize of lifting equipments such as wire rope
slings, wire ropes, cranes, hooks, forklifts and others. While working with these
equipments it is necessary to assure that the equipment is maintained and tested
in accordance to the relevant regulations and rules.
The documentary receipt along with the physical receipt and the dispatch
activities are found to run in a simultaneous basis.
The sub process of air cargo handling concerning the arrivals is known as airside,
the unloading cargo from aircraft takes place where shipments takes place either
in containers, in bags or loose gets unloaded onto dollies.
The air cargo handling sub-process concerning arrivals to departures known as
landside where the cargo warehouse as well as on the forwarders handling
activities that is arrivals as well as handling activities that is departures runs or
takes place simultaneously.

2. Is it a shared responsibility? If so who are responsible?
The responsibility of air cargo process to be executed in an efficient manner depends
on a number of the personnel’s who are responsible for framing up the rules and
regulations to be followed in the process. The responsibility is a shared one including
the members International Air Transport Association who conveys the requirements
which the air transport needs to follow and execute efficiently making the traveling a
pleasant one for the passengers. The second body is the Air Cargo Security Body
who is responsible for executing the service in an efficient manner and effective
manner. A number of schemes have been framed by the home affairs of Australia,
including accredited air cargo agent scheme, regulated air cargo agent scheme and
known consignor scheme (Drljača, 2017). These schemes have divided the
responsibility of air cargo on three different personnel’s thus, bringing diversity in
responsibility and efficiency in the exercise. The Civil Aviation Safety Authority also
shares the responsibility of air cargo action to be executed in an accurate manner. All
these bodies together help the system to deliver quality services to the passengers.
A balanced and consultative approach is required for executing the task in an

important and peak industry body responsible for transport of dangerous goods by air. It
consists the major regional and representatives from Australia, New Zealand, RAAF,
domestic and international freight forwards and dangerous goods training organizations.
Followed by a standing invitation, number of regulators concerning the transport of
dangerous goods by air includes CASA, CAA New Zealand, Australian Transport Safety
Bureau, Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development and the Australian
Federal Police (Brandt and Nickel, 2018).
In a year, three meetings are held by ADGATC, with alternative situations, between
Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide. The meetings to be held are aligned with
IATA dangerous Goods Board or ICAO dangerous goods panel meetings. The chairman of
