Homework Assignment
AI Summary
This assignment solution addresses key aspects of airport development planning and forecasting. It outlines the components of airport development planning, including terminal design, airport approvals, and terminal planning. It explains why forecasting is not an exact science, citing limitations in satellite imagery, atmospheric equations, and the importance of local geographical features. The document emphasizes the necessity of an airport master plan for efficient development and stakeholder management. It explores the drivers behind the pressure for airports to increase non-aeronautical revenues and highlights measures airports can take to mitigate climate change impacts, particularly focusing on carbon emissions. The assignment also reflects on the level of understanding of the studied lecture and references relevant resources.

1. Provide three examples of what airport development planning would involve.
Airport development planning includes plans and construction of terminals, runways, and other
support facilities for operation. Developing needs large capitals and prediction of growth of
airlines and passengers. The three main parts involve
Airport Designing: Designing of airports is taken on by architecture firms. Architects work
alongside aviation engineers to build the framework of the airport. They develop master plans
which are used for further future works.
Airport Approvals: To plan an airport various approvals are needed. Three main being technical
approvals, financial approvals, and environmental approvals.
Terminal Planning: Various criteria like passenger flow, walking distance, retail areas, ease in
accessing retail areas, compatibility with airplane characteristics are considered while planning a
terminal.
2. In your words, why is forecasting not an exact science?
3. In spite of immense improvement, weather forecasting is still not an exact science. First of
all, atmospheric images are constructed from satellite imagery with a very low range. This, at
best, gives an approximation. Secondly, the equations to explain the actions of the
atmosphere and forecast its future condition are not accurate; rather they are
approximations. And finally, awareness and experience of local geographical features are
essential for accurate weather prediction, which a forecasting system lacks.
4. Why is an Airport Master Plan necessary?
An airport master plan is generally considered as the vision of the airport development as t helps in
the understanding of the needs of developments and expansion of the airside, land side and the
airport. The master plan aims at the efficiency as well as the operational flexibility of the business in
a balanced and a structured manner. It is also required to learn about the relevant strategies with
the internal and the external stakeholders and to relate the operational functions with the financial,
environmental and economic strategies.

6. Why is there pressure for airports to grow non-aeronautical revenues?
Traffic growth is driven by low cost carriers putting pressure on Aero revenue.
It has been seen that the airports have put more pressures in the
development of the not so core management stuffs for increasing their non
aero revenue. It has been pointed out that these revenues ultimately helps in
the development of customer satisfaction and the value added services thus
make them having a competitive advantage. The per airport bench marking
and maximizing the store availabilities are also means of gaining more
revenues even in the laen seasons when the aviation business is not at its
peak,
7. Over which areas can airports around the world take measures to minimize the impact on
climate change?
The main area on which the airports stress mainly in order to minimise the climate change is the
rate of carbon emission. If the carbon emission can be stopped it can produce less effect on the
atmospheric pressure.
