An Introduction to Airports
Discussions
I have learnt that an Airport is a facility where various passengers connect from
transportation from the ground to the air transportation. I have known that the description of
various airports can be split into airside and landside. I have studied about the landside airport
and known that the descriptions of the landside airports cover the way passengers depart and
arrive the building of airport terminal and move through the building of airport terminal in
order to board the aircraft’s (Bouma et al 2016). I have studies about the airside airport and
known that it describes the different movements of the airplanes on the surface of airports.
I have studies about various airports around the world and learned that an airports
includes one runway and the other common components of the airports that I have learned are
hangars and terminal buildings (Ralphs, Shahab and Ahmadpoor 2020). Apart from all
theses, I have learned that an airport can have various infrastructures and facilities that
consist of base operator services those are fixed, control of air traffic, restaurants and lounges
and the emergency services. I have also learned that in the terminology of North America,
Airports can be also called as a military airport. I have learned about the term aerodrome and
it means any surface utilised tor landing or taking off. I have known that in other terms, the
airport can also be referred to as an aerodrome that is licensed by the organizations of
government. I have studied that Airports have to be maintained to higher standards of safety
and there are generally no minimum standards for an aerodrome that is basic.
I have learned about the various characteristics of the airports and saw that the
airports can vary in size. I have seen that the airports those are smaller or less developed have
a single runway and it is generally shorter than 1000m. I have learned about the international
airports and known that their runways are usually paved and they are 2000m longer. I have

learned there are various small airports whose runways are not maintained properly and
consist of dirt, grass and gravel rather than concrete and asphalt (Jamieson and White 2019).
I have learned that the airports are split into landside and airside areas. I have seen
that the areas of landside include roads, parking lots and farms of fuel tank. I have seen that
the areas of airside consists of all the areas those are accessible to the airplanes such as the
taxiways, runways and the ramps. I have learned that the passengers those are boarding the
commercial flights usually access the areas of airside through the terminals and they buy
tickets, check their luggage, security check and board the airplane (Graham 2018). I have
seen that the areas where the aircrafts are parked next to the terminal in order to load the
baggage and passengers is called ramp. I have learnt that the areas of parking for the
airplanes away from the terminals are known as aprons. I have known that the both small and
large airports can be uncontrolled and it depends on the density of air traffic and the funds
available. Because of the capacity and very busy airspace, I have learnt that most of the
international airports have control of air traffic those are located on site.
I have seen that most of large airports has place for food courts and shops and these
services offers the passengers with food and drinks before they get into the flight. I have
studies that the International airports generally have shops those are duty-free where the
passengers do not need to pay duty fees on the items that they purchase (Fuerst and Gross
2018). I have learnt that the airlines those are larger operate lounges for the premium
passengers only.
I have studied that other than the people, the airports are also responsible in order to
move large volumes. I have learned that there are various cargo airlines that operate all
around the world. The cargo airlines have their infrastructure and on-site in order to transfer
the parcels between the air and the ground modes of transportation (Yuene et al 2017). I have
learned there are various small airports whose runways are not maintained properly and
consist of dirt, grass and gravel rather than concrete and asphalt (Jamieson and White 2019).
