AIRPORT PLANNING 2
Introduction
The airport management is required to effectively focus on the airport planning process so
that the project developed is able to meet the needs and requirements of the stakeholders
within the industry. The airport planning is effectively defined as a process which defines that
the guidelines through which an attainable phase for the airport can be developed and the
effective use of the airport resources and satisfaction can be achieved within the aviation
industry. It is required to be done effectively because it ensures the success or the
sustainability of the project within the industry and developing an effective relationship with
the stakeholders (FAA, 2018).
The analysis is effectively focused on analysing the key challenges that the management face
during the planning process including the terminal development, runway capacity and the
accessibility at the airports. the report effectively focuses on the impact of the planning
activities on the stakeholders and identifying the airports that are effectively dealing with
such challenges.
Planning Challenges
The management is required to effectively focus on the development of the airport,
considering every factor so that it can meet the present as well as the future requirements with
necessary changes. The structure of the airport is the basic infrastructure of an airport and is
required that it is being structured as per the developed Standards within the industry so that
the maximum efficiency can be achieved. The planning of terminal for the airport focuses on
certain key challenges, as it is required that the area allocated for terminal development is
effectively utilised and fulfils the basic needs and requirements (Ruiz, 2014).
The terminal development requires that it is according the passenger flow and traffic, the
facilities are available and are interconnected, there is a scope to expand in future or to make
necessary changes if required and the processing time that will be required by a passenger to
clear all the check-ins, security checks, and screenings. The management focuses on the
numerous factors and challenges while developing runway and deciding upon its capacity
also it involves an amount of time, the challenges involved includes the reaching the
stakeholders purpose and fulfilling their needs and requirements, deciding upon the
environmental review process, which means that the management is required to focus on its
social and environmental responsibilities (FAA, 2010).

The runway should be developed so that it meets the requirements and the passenger traffics
and accordingly provides the airport with an effective factor within the sector. Also, with the
technological changes within the industry, it is required that such factors should also be
focused upon while deciding upon the planning of the airport so that every factor can be
effectively analysed and focused upon. The airport management is required to ensure that the
passengers at the airport can get the best service experience and the passengers can make the
best use of the facilities available, to ensure such accessibility the management face certain
challenges during the planning process (Love, 2020).
The planning challenges involves the airport facilities and the designing process so that the
passenger's service satisfaction can be ensured. The major challenges faced by the airport
management is to identify the requirements of the passengers and accordingly ensure that the
services and facilities are available and are accessible to the individuals when requires so that
their satisfaction can be ensured. As the accessibility at the airport defines what is best for the
airline and for the experience for the passenger (Baskas, 2016).
Challenges and examples of airports
Zagreb International Airport can be effectively considered as an example in order to identify
the issues and how effectively the management focuses on eliminating the issues to ensure
smooth and effective operations of the activities at the airport. The airport has been
effectively developed after analysing the requirements and the stakeholder’s expectation. The
project has effectively been designed for around 5.35 million passenger holding capacity, and
with an ain to operate the airport effectively for over a period of 30 years. The terminal as
well as the runway capacity issues have been effectively addressed by the airport
management and have appointed an independent engineer to overlook the activities and to
ensure that the activities are being conducted as per required and planned (Arup, 2020).
The runway capacity is an effective way to ensure that the airport is able to handle the
passenger traffics and to ensure that it is able to meet the industry requirements. The Narita
International Airport effectively focuses on expanding its runway capacity so that it can
effectively serve within the industry and can provide with effective services to its customers
as well as other stakeholders within the industry. The Airport management has developed a
plan to expand its operating hours as step first, after that focusing upon improving the runway
capacity and later on focus on the expansion of the runways so that the airport can meet the
increasing demand of the industry (Narita International Airport, 2020).

AIRPORT PLANNING 4
The planning of the airport activities is required to be done so that the core purpose of the
project can be fulfilled effectively and accordingly the goals and objectives can be achieved.
The terminal development and the planning of the runway capacity are important aspects but
along with such activities, it is required that the management focuses on ensuring the
accessibility services at the Airport. Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, effectively focuses
on the utilising the area to develop a terminal that fulfils the purpose, also ensures that the
services are being provided effectively within the terminal. The management has effectively
planned the structure so that the passengers can be provided with the satisfactory services and
has been designed in a manner so that the services are in the easy reach of the passengers at
the airport (BTR, 2018).
Impacts of Terminal, Runway Capacity and Accessibility
planning on stakeholders
The stakeholders are an important factor that is required to be considered to ensure the
success of a project. The needs and requirements of the stakeholders are required to be
effectively analysed and accordingly, the planning process should be executed so that the
success, as well as sustainability, can be ensured. The major stakeholders of the airports are
the airlines, the passengers, the employees of the management at the airport, regulatory
authorities and other tenants. Therefore, it is required while planning of the airport activities
and structure, the management focus on the needs of the stakeholders and the impact on the
operations (Rawson & Hooper, 2012).
The terminal ensures the effective and the smooth processing of the activities before and after
the journey, therefore, an effective planning results in providing quality service and meets the
purpose of the stakeholders such as airlines as well as the passengers. Also, the development
of effective terminal results in providing services to passengers and helps in developing better
relations with the airlines and the authorities within the industry.
The runway capacity of an airport effectively defines the number of the passengers or the
flight operations that it can handle at a point of time, therefore, the planning done should be
according to the requirements and the passenger traffic, as if it not planned well, then the
passengers may have to wait for a longer time period, hence impacting the service experience
and the relations with the airline operators, the runway capacity influences the cost of
operations for the airport regulatory authorities as they have to ensure that they have the

required slots available and if there is any issue in any of the slot it directly impacts the
operations (Schaar & Sherry, 2010).
The accessibility at airports is required to be ensured so that the passengers can be provided
with the quality services and better experience, if the planning of the accessibility has not
been done properly, it would impact the satisfaction level of the passengers hence impacting
the overall revenue generations for the airport, the accessibility is also the part of the terminal
planning, therefore during the planning of terminal development it is required to be ensured
that the facilities have been ensured as per the needs and requirements of the stakeholders,
and the facilities are available as and when required (O’Flynn, 2016).
Conclusion
The airport planning involves certain challenges that are required to be taken care of as the
development of the terminal and the runway capacity should be in accordance with the
passenger traffic and the industry requirement so that the passengers can be handled
effectively. The airport management is also required to focus on the accessibility available at
the airport, the challenge faced by the management is deciding upon the passenger’s
requirements and accordingly making the arrangements at the terminal. The Zagreb
International Airport, Narita International Airport and the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport
are the examples that explain that the airport management is required to focus on the
requirements and effectively develop policies and models to develop the airport and to
provide the stakeholders with the satisfied services.
