INTRODUCTION
A contemporary definition of health takes into consideration that disease and disability can
often co-exists with wellness. There are various contemporary health issues such as drug and
alcohol abuse, depression, cancer, obesity that can affect well-being and health outcome of an
individual. In this health care services are provided to enhance safety of patient and to improve
their quality of life. Present report will lay emphasis on the contemporary health issues such as
drug and alcohol abuse. It will also focus on making a business plan for substance abuse for a
detox center in London.

Substance abuse is something which one should not take lightly. It appears when an
individual is being engaged in making excessive use of the alcohol. So many people who have
faced substance abuse are ready to quit and change their behaviour. Both legal and illegal drugs
can change a way related to how mind works. Alcohol can affect the working of brain severely.
Excessive drinking can lead to increase in number of accidents and injury. Substance abuse is
basically making use of illegal drugs in way it has been prescribed or intended. Many drugs
which are abused are also addictive (Lewis, (2017). Drug abuse can be seen in childhood and can
be continued throughout till the adulthood. People who are involved in abusing drugs can take
them initially out of curiosity or because of peer pressure.
Making excessive use of alcohol and drugs can affect the functioning of various body parts
severely and also it can damage the working of brain. There are various common signs and
symptoms of drug abuse. Substance abuse can also cause issues in relationship. The common
symptoms that can be seen during the time of this contemporary issue includes deterioration in
personal relationships, difficulty in handling of jobs, risky sexual behaviour, issues in finance,
making use of higher dose to get the same effect. There are also various other signs and
symptoms that can be seen while abusing alcohol and drugs. This can lead to drug intoxication.
In this the issues such as restlessness, changes in mood, impaired vision, nausea and impaired
judgment and memory can be seen. The mental status of an individual can also be changed
because of the drug abuse (Harper & Duke, (2017).
There are also other severe symptoms that can indicate a life threatening situation in an
individual. It includes being in danger to oneself and others and also there can be seen suicidal

symptoms and behaviour. An individual who is engaged in abusing drug can be a danger to
oneself or also can create threat to others. There can also be other issues such as problem in
breathing, clammy skin, confusion, diarrhoea.
The causes of drug abuse are particularly not known and also there is a brief
understanding of the causes. The reason behind drug and alcohol abuse can be biological factors
such as genetics and also the presence of psychiatric disorders. The other environmental factors
such as peer pressure, history based on alcohol abuse, stress, anxiety, loss of a loved one can also
lead to alcohol and drug abuse. There are various risk factors that can lead to drug abuse. It
includes anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, ADHD, stress, early usage of drugs. Personality
disorders which includes behavioural disorders, personality disorders can also lead to substance
abuse. There are various causes which can lead to substance abuse and can become the main
factor for development of drug addiction.
Environmental factors: It includes factors such as family thoughts, belief and attitude. It
also involves exposure to peer group which increases the use of drugs. This can play a major role
in the starting use of drugs.
Genetic factors: Once an individual has started the use of drugs, it can be developed in
genes and also can be inherited in genetic traits. It can delay the progression related to disease.
Drug and alcohol abuse is one of the greatest issues which can be seen in United
Kingdom. It was being analysed that over more than 8000 casualties were been seen in year
2015. 220 fatalities were analysed in same year. It was also estimated that around 595131 people
were been suffering from drug and alcohol abuse in United Kingdom (Crouch et.al., (2018). It
was also being analysed and evaluated that around 4 out of 10 people in United Kingdom were
unable to complete their rehab program. The reason can be because alcohol is an addictive mind
impairing substance. The increasing rate of alcohol and drug abuse includes the risk factor
because of which an individual is been engaged in consuming drugs and alcohol on regular basis.
It includes the following:
ï‚· Family history of addiction: Drug addiction is one of the most common situation that
can be seen in some families. It leads to genetic predisposition. If the parent or sibling of
any individual is addicted to alcohol, then risk of abuse increases.

depression, ADHD, loss of loved ones, post-traumatic stress then risks of making use of
drugs increases and this can affect the well-being and health outcome of an individual.

face various issues such as psychotic behaviour and in worst case scenario seizures can be faced
because of overdose of situation. GHB and flunitrazepam are also the drugs which increases
addiction of an individual. In this situation it has been analysed that an individual when develops
the addiction of this type of drug they cannot live without it. It can affect the way their brain
works and also can lay negative impact on well-being and health aspect of an individual. There
are various causes because of which an individual can be engaged in making use of alcohol and
drugs. One of the major reason is peer pressure.
The adults and teenagers who are involved in this type of situation, also do not have an
idea about how their life can be affected because of this. It has also been analysed that in United
Kingdom around 14.1% of people in United Kingdom over the age of 18 years are been involved
in consuming alcohol and smoking cigars. The data has been generated from the annual
population survey (Skrott et.al., (2017). The adults are being engaged in drinking continuously
and this has affected their health and well-being severely. They also faced various type of disease

The business plan is being made for detox plus UK rehab center. In this prospective
funders offering solutions and interventions to help to tackle a challenge. It will lay emphasis on
the following points.
Executive summary: In this plan the rehab center has been engaged in providing the
potential solutions for challenges which are being faced because of substance abuse. It has
provided the details related to various interventions that can be used in enhancing health and
well-being of an individual facing drug and alcohol abuse. In this plan all the changes which are
being made will be analysed by the rehabs so that they can provide people with better treatment.
Mission and Vision: The mission of the plan is to improvise the health outcome and well-
being of individual who are facing substance abuse.
Service description of detox center: In this Psychopharmacology with specialist’s
psychiatrist will be provided to those who are been going through issues of substance abuse.
Treatment will be tailored according to needs and demands of an individual. The other service
which will be given includes psychotherapy (Carton et.al., (2018). In this the patient will be
helped in controlling their emotions, so that they do not further engaged in making use of drugs
or alcohol. Substance Abuse and Addiction treatment centerians and also other recovery services
will be given so that health and well-being can be enhanced. This program is basically of four
weeks
Target audience: The target audience for the present business plan will be young adults
and teenagers of United Kingdom who are been facing the issues of drug and alcohol abuse.
They will be provided with the help for finding out the right rehab center in order to improvise
their well-being and quality of life.
Changes and challenges: There are various challenges and changes which is being faced

individual can be improved. It has also been analysed that for solving these challenges
