Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background
The consumption of alcohol has been widespread within Australia and associated with many
social and cultural activities. Excessive consumption of alcohol has been major cause of ill
health and social harms. As per research done by of Radovanovic et al., (2016), there have been
increase in absenteeism in Australia in 2013 has been estimated at 7.5 million days resulting in
cost of over $2 billion loss in workplace. There have been differences in consumption of alcohol
based on gender and ages. Men has been drinking from an earlier age compared to woman.
Woman of all ages have been consuming less alcohol than men and most of women have been
non-drinkers. Daily drinking of alcohol by people aged 16 years and older has been stable
between 2006 and 2011. According to Lotar Rihtarić et al., (2016), there has been small decrease
in use of alcohol occurred between 2011 and 2015. As per research done by of Radovanovic et
al., (2016), In 2013, 47% of pregnant women have reported been consuming alcohol during
pregnancy. This have been a serious issue related to this consumption of alcohol in Australia.
This research has focused on analyzing impact of alcohol on various demographics and ages of
individual. This research analyses whether disgust message framing an effective strategy for
reducing alcohol consumption.
1.2 Problem statement
The major problem discussed in this research has been heath issue of people in Australia due
to consumption of alcohol. The misuse of alcohol has been one of the major reason of uncertain
death of individuals in Australia. Most of the deaths have been due to alcoholic liver cirrhosis.
Long term alcohol use might lead to chronic disease that develop slowly and affect older people.

The aim of the research has focused on analyzing impact of alcohol consumption on health of
individuals in Australia.

To recommend strategies for minimize these issues in Australia

1.4 Hypothesis
Following are the hypothesis for this research:
The first hypothesis is as follows:
H0: The consumption of alcohol in Australia is a problem.
H1: The consumption of alcohol is not a problem
The second hypothesis is as follows:
H0: Disgust message framing has been an effective strategy for reducing alcohol consumption
H1: Disgust message framing has not been an effective strategy for reducing alcohol
consumption
