INTRODUCTION
An association has to achieve their targets and goals within specific period of time and
for this, it is required for them to manage their entire assets in an effective manner. If manager
concentrate on their operational activities then, they can easily maximize their profits (White,
2016). Aldi is a retail sector which is providing variety of products to their customers as per their
requirements. They have almost 5000 staff members who are working with them. Along with
this, they are operating their business in more than 15 nations. Fundamental aim of this project is
to determine about various roles and responsibilities of leader and manager. They have
distinctive roles which is playing by them. Additionally, many models as well as theories are
going to include in this assignment. There are various approaches and their significance which
are related to operational management. Apart from this, employer has to take judgements
effectively by taking into under consideration many components such as government,
stakeholders, CSR activities and many more (Operations and Project Management (OPM),
2017).

P1 Role and characteristics of leader and manager
To achieve success and growth, an organisation requires talented workforce. In modern
era, it has been understood by enterprise that, workers are assets for them; therefore, their
significance is increasing continuously. There are various individuals who get confused amongst
leader and manager. They both are totally distinguish from each other (Lindström and et. al.,
2015).
Henceforth, there are distinctive characteristic as well as roles of leader is mentioned as
beneath:
Create a vision: It is associated with future and aid to decide that what kind of strategies
will adopt by them. Some companies are not able to determine their success as they never
concentrate on this. Aldi wants to create those products which is entirely different from their
rivals and help to accomplish need of buyers. Along with this, it will make their living standard
better. Vision will be formulated on estimations or perceptions. Therefore, leader of firm plays
an eminent part to take enterprise to next level. They need to create their items in an innovative
way. He can conduct a research to know wants of their purchasers; so that, he can fulfil them and

take benefits from their competitors at competitive world. Main obligation of leader is to develop
a proper vision for firm and provide guidance to employees to accomplish it within a specific
period of time. Hence, with assistance of this, staff members will share their values and it assists
them to enhance their team spirit. Leader has to set some targets for their workers; thus, they can
attain it within limited period of time (López and et. al., 2015).
Lead change: There are various individuals who never support any modifications in an
association as there is no certainty for this. Issue is much related to internal aspect of firm.
Therefore, main duty of leader to make people understand about it so that they can adopt
alterations without any issues. Positive changes will cater success and improvement to company
which aid them to take benefits from their rivals at marketplace. Basically, there are many
strategies are utilized by them and six sigma is one of them. Leader convince their workers to do
hard work to develop an innovative goods for users. For this, they can conduct research and will
able to find out needs of buyers. Hence, they will do alterations into their products and services
as per requirements of their clients. As a result, company will achieve their coveted targets and
goals within specific period of time.
Inspire people: It is essential for a leader to motivate their staff members in continuous
manner; so that, this will help them to enhance their working performance. For above stated aim,
there are two kinds of benefits will provide them i.e. monetary and non monetary. It is required
for a leader to be confident always as it will help them to acquire trust of workers which is
advantageous for everyone (Expósito and et. al., 2016). If leader inspire their employees then,
they can easily eliminate their weaknesses through utilizing their strengths. It is must for
company as this will assist to develop an effective group.
Analyse strength of an employee: It is foremost quality of a leader and his main
responsibility is to determine best and talented staff members for firm. If they do their task
adequately then, it will be easy for them to attain desired targets within specific period of time.
Various individuals never know about their characteristics which are in built into them; hence,
leader has to identify them as this will be advantageous for both i.e. individual and organisation.
Roles and characteristics of manager:
Implementation of strategy: Long term targets are decided by higher authority for an
association. To attain it within specific time frame, they need manager. Being a manger, I play an
eminent part to apply and execute various strategies such as six sigma. Along with this, I have to

convey message to top level authorities. Additionally, it is essential for me to develop an open
communication in organisation; thus, workers will share their thoughts and opinions with me
easily (Liu and et. al., 2015).
Monitoring: Being a manger, it is fundamental for me to monitor performance of
employees; so that, I will know that entire work is complete within time duration and they can
attain desired goals timely. Along with this, it is necessary for me to collect entire data as well as
information appropriately so that it can be utilized by me to formulate plan for future.
Conflict resolution: In enterprise distinctive kinds of people are working who belongs to
various culture and have their own values and beliefs. Thus, by using problems solving skills, I
need to sort out disputes timely so that employees will complete their work without any delay.

specific period of time. Both leader as well as manager are significant for firm as they cater
success and growth to firm (Fayol, 2016). Therefore, there are some circumstances which are
mentioned below will describe distinctive roles of manager and leader in an effective manner:
Decision making
Role of leader: He takes a proficient judgement for firm that they need to make improve quality
of their goods and services; therefore, company will give more satisfaction to their users. For

above stated purpose, they adopt six sigma strategy. It is main responsibility of a leader to
determine change needs in enterprise and in addition inspire staff members so that they can use
their abilities and skills to make goods more adequate. If they use new techniques or methods
then, proper training is required by them. Therefore, they will attain long term goals of firm
which is decided by them. Along with this, leader has to provide directions to workers so that
they will complete their task effectively and efficiently.
Function of manager: There fundamental purpose is to develop an open conversation amongst
higher authority and labours. If he provides training to their employees then this will aid them to
enhance their work execution which will provide benefits to Aldi (Hong and et. al., 2015). Along
with this, it is required for manager to create proper cooperation amongst all departments to get
positive outcomes.
Risk Taking
Role of leader: It is not easy to change thought and opinion of a leader. He needs to comprehend
significance of their workers and promote their culture. He took risk by introducing some new
and unique goods into marketplace as there are many organisations who are producing same
items at a reasonable prices. But, they introduce it at high value and best quality. Some people
think that it is not good as they need to reduce price of new products. As quality is best; so that
this will help them to take benefits from their rivals. Higher the risk, higher the profits.
Function of manager: Basically, they never take high risk in company. Their aim is to provide
assistance to leader and encourage him to do something new. They will assist higher authority is
some procedures like training, recruitment, staffing and many more.

There are many types of leaders who do their work in firm. Some will take help of their
subordinates in decision making process but many will never take aid of their staff members in it
(Slack, 2015). Therefore, there are various models as well as theories related to leaders are
mentioned as beneath:
Situational leadership: There are many opportunities which can be obtained by a leader
and they determined that there are many defects into their products; so that, he apply strategy of
six sigma into their production procedure. This method will aid them to modify things as per
their requirements. There are many staff members who face difficulties in implementing this
approach into business. Hence, leader never force them in fact he gives training to their

wants of people according to their requirements.

Technological changes: In modern era, there are various kinds of alteration are taking
place which are related to new technologies. Thus, it is required for Aldi to adopt those changes
into their business as this will assist them to survive for long term at marketplace. They need to
introduce their business online because this will help them to improve their customer base. With
assistance of new tools as well as methods, quality of products will get enhanced. To make
familiar with new procedures to workers, manager will provide training to them. As a result,
entire work will complete within specific period of time and they will accomplish their targets
effectively and efficiently (Hosseinzadeh and Salmasi, 2015).
Corporate social responsibility: It is fundamental for manager of firm to fulfil all
activities which are associated with CSR because this will assist them to compete their
competitors at competitive world. Along with this, if firm fulfil it then, they can easily maintain

their goodwill at marketplace. This will help to gain trust of social people. Additionally, they can
enhance their revenues appropriately (Peng and et. al., 2015).
Business ethics: As Aldi is doing their business in retail; therefore, it is required for them
to follow all guidelines which is related to their business. Therefore, they can do their business
more adequately. If they need to take license for their business then they have to but if they do
not do that then they will get punished as per law. This will affect their goodwill in adverse way
and along with this, they will loose their clients.
Henceforth, it is essential for manager of company to consider all above mentioned
factors while taking decision for firm. As this can influence their judgement either directly or
indirectly (Talari, Yazdaninejad and Haghifam, 2015).

From above mentioned report it has been comprehended that an organisation has to
manage their operational activities in an effective manner. As this can affect their profits and
reputation at marketplace. If it is managed adequately then, it will be easy for them to attain
coveted targets within specific period of time. There are various approaches which can be

manager has to consider all factors because it can provide influence to their decision making
