Lesson Summary and
Focus: The lesson is focused on helping students learn and understand algebraic
expressions where they write algebraic expressions based on written
expressions. This is the first part of two lessons requiring students to write
algebraic expressions from written expressions. Students will be required to
associate words with their relevant expressions and the entire class will use
similar variables to avoid confusion in the lesson. A class work assignment
will be done at the end of the lesson
Classroom and Student
Factors/Grouping: The classroom factors of significance that will impact this lesson include the
demographics- the class has Latin Americans, African Americans, Asians,
and White students from different backgrounds; as race and teacher
evaluations have been found to be a predictor of student algebra
placement . Age will not be much of a difference as all students fall in the 10
to 11 year age group. Student factors will also affect teaching and the lesson
plan; for students with identified disabilities, the 504s will be used, while
slow learners will have IEP, with ELLs requiring simpler English and
additional explanation to grasp the concepts. Gifted learners will be
assessed differently from slow learners and greater focus will be placed on
students with disabilities and slow learners, from the activities they engage
in, the time they take on each activity, and assessment.
National/State Learning
Standards: The lesson plan is governed by the Core Standards for math and at this grade
include a requirement for the ability of learners to write and interpret
numerical expressions through the use of brackets, parentheses or braces. The
students are required to be able to write expressions recording calculations
with numbers as well as interpret numerical expressions without evaluation.

The students also need to meet the Core Standard of analyzing patterns and
relationships within expressions and be able to explain the patterns. Students
should identify apparent relationships between corresponding terms and
generate numerical patterns through the use of two given rules.
Specific Common Core Standards are
5. EEE.2 – Read, write, and evaluate expressions where letters stand for
numbers
5.EEE. 2 a – Write expressions recording operations with numbers as well as
with letters standing for numbers
5. EEE. 2B – Identify parts of expressions using mathematical terms (product,
term, sum, quotient, factor, coefficient) and view parts of expressions as single
entities.
Specific Learning
Target(s)/Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students are able to read and write expressions
where letters replace/ stand for numbers
The students are bale to write algebraic expressions from expressions written
in words and discuss the difference between them
Given ten expressions, students should correctly write at east eight expressions
correctly
Academic Language Numerical expression- Is an expression that contains one or more
operations or numbers
Algebraic Expression – Is an expression with at least a single variable
Variable - Is any symbol or letter of the alphabet representing a quantity
Written Expression – Is an expression that is written using words

Classwork assignments (three) copies including scissors and tapes

Homework
Scaffolding consisting of a work launch sheet that students will use
throughout the remainder of the unit, specifically to assist students with
learning difficulties and ELLs equate words with their correct operation.
The first activity involves matching and is designed to aid ELLs and those with
learning difficulties.
Class assignment to be modified by not making it a matching assignment
