RESEARCH DESING IN HEALTH
RESEARCH PROPOSAL FOR ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE
Abstract
Alzheimer Disease is considered as one of the world’s dangerous disease because its
causes and cure are not yet found. The disease is perceived to be very common with the old
adults .Alzheimer Disease and dementia is associated with a number of challenges upon the
infection. Once the person has been infected, he starts to loose his memory, his thinking ability
and the behavior also changes. For this reason, the research design and proposal is aiming at
finding some issues related to the disease which include the following: the scientific principle
behind the research, the possible causes and cure of the disease and finally the general behavior
of the affected persons in terms of the brain functionality. The study uses the qualitative
techniques approach as a method of data collection. The total number of respondents for the
research is 20 which will provide the quality results and findings for the project. The respondents
comprises of the following people: Caregivers, professional doctors and the Nurses within the
specified hospitals.
The design also identifies the Ethical and social consideration a key for the study; the
respondents have consent of the interview for example no participant is allowed to write his
name on the questionnaire and any one of them willing to pull out before the study begins is free
to do so. Since it one of the most delicate research, the storage and collection of data is also
governed by the policies and regulations that protect the general guidelines to the investigation.
The document should be used as a general guide to the further research on the disease. The
different objectives and aims of the study is also discussed in the proposal which include the

scientific research on the disease, the general behavior and finally the preventive and cure for the
Alzheimer Disease and the related infections.
CHAPTER ONE
INTRODUCTION
1.0 Introduction
Alzheimer is a disease which destroys the memory and other mental functions of the
brain (Dubois et al 2014).The condition often develops and get worse with the time. This
development becomes so severe to interfere with the daily routine of the victim. Most people
believe that Alzheimer is associated with the old people, yet this is not so, but it is a disease that
mostly affects the aging people of age ranging from 60years and above (Francis et al 2009). The
old age is therefore considered as one of the factors which influence the Alzheimer disease.
During the early stage, the memory loss becomes so mild than when it has now taken a period
during the development stage (Francis et al 2009). A part of the memory is lost during the period
of infection, the patient also loses the ability to carry on with any conversation and also to
respond to any environment.
Alzheimer is regarded as one of the leading causes of death in both the United States and
the United Kingdom. The people living with the Alzheimer are said to be living for around nine
years after the symptoms become visible and noticeable for the others (Stephen et al. 2018).
However, the survival of an Alzheimer’s is between the average of five to twenty years during
the infection which depends on the age factor and provided health conditions within the given
period (Dubois et al 2010) The researchers can still not explain why the disease only affects the
selected few but not others. Alzheimer is one of the diseases that make people to even forget
about their loved ones. The recent reports show that the disease affects about 700000 of the new

patients yearly in entire Europe (Heneka et al 2015). In addition to its effects, Alzheimer disease
is also responsible for the increasing number of dependency of the aged person within the world
statistics more so in Europe (Alzheimer's Association 2016).
The numerous effects of Alzheimer disease to the affected persons has opened up new
international research to come up with prevention measures and ways of making it slow on the
affected persons. The public attention on the causes and effects of the Alzheimer disease is
enough evidence that further research will be able to solve these challenges and other diseases
related to it. One of the motivating factors to this research is the rate of dependency among the
old people more so in the affected continents; the disease is perceived to be more vulnerable
among the aging people (Steinberg et al 2015). The disease is one of the mists dangerous around
the world; it must be dealt with by supporting and encouraging many scholars with the vast
knowledge and experience on the same disease. Different governments and organizations are
coming up together to find a solution to the problem through some research on the same disease
(Brownson et al 2017). If the disease is prevented, the country's economic value and experience
will change since most of the funds used in the care units shall be used in other sectors within the
given period.
1.1 Aims of the proposal
o To understand the scientific study of the Alzheimer Disease
o To find out the possible prevention and cure measures for the Alzheimer Disease
o To study the behavior, cognition, and functionality if the brain of the affected

1.2 Objectives
For the research to be successful some targets are set aside to assist in the full
implementation of the goals and intended purpose of a research. The following represents the
sets of targets for the study.
o To have a comprehensive and understanding review of the existing scientific
evidence of the Alzheimer research and also to look at the benefits and the
challenges of a diagnosis of the disease.
o To discussion on the various literature on research interviews and other related
studies which have identified the risks associated with the determination of the
Alzheimer Disease.
The research is also to look into the individual's experience on the changes of the
behavior, cognition and the functions of the brain to the affected
CHAPTER TWO
LITERATURE REVIEW
2.0 Introduction
In the world statistics, the figure shows that the American that lives with the Alzheimer
Disease is nearly 5million (Alzheimer’s 2015). Since there are no changes which will change the
progressive of this brain disorder, this may makes them loose the ability in the conversation
remembering, thinking and also to increase the rate of dependency among the adults. Despite all
these, there is still hope of life among the most affected elders within the vulnerable nations. Due
to the public attention on the Alzheimer Disease and related infections, the resources have been
pulled to find the solution to this problem through research. Through the potential leadership of
the NIH that is the National Institute of Health, a number of responsible communities are

working so hard through research to come up with a long-lasting solution and also to identify the
possible means of preventing the Alzheimer Disease.
2.2 The Nation United against Alzheimer Disease
Dealing with the Alzheimer Disease and other related dementias is one of the issues that
should be dealt with globally; for this reason, the NIH and other federal organizations have
decided to join hand in fighting the AD. For example, in January 2011, the President Obama of
America signed the National Alzheimer Project Act (NAPA) which motivated the Americans on
their health plan related to Alzheimer and other research about it (McKhann et al 2014).
The provided laws were also to establish the Advisory Council on the Alzheimer
Diseases research and other services related to the care. The board comprises mostly with the
experts on the AD and the associated infections. The first plan of the advisory was to address the
outlined objectives of the Alzheimer Diseases compared to the 2012 targets and other proposals
put in place to deliver the same goals from the research. Some of the goals outlined by the board
included the following: finding the intervention on how to treat the disease among other issues.
The idea of the research was to solve or find is solution to the problems related to the Alzheimer
Diseases before the year 2025.
The Annual update of 2014 on the disease shows that the component of the research body
on Alzheimer; the NIH plays a significant role on the leadership in the collaborative ideas which
involves both the public and private sectors (Robert et al 2009).The academic, Clinicians,
advocacy was also left behind in the research for the betterment of the health sector.
2.3 The proposed research strategy
The proposed strategy for this research is the qualitative techniques approach. The
qualitative technique is always regarded as subjective and concentrates mainly on the opinions
Document Page
Research Proposal For Alzheimer’s Disease7
and also in the perception but not on the measurable data (Lewis 2015. Examples of the
qualitative approach include the interview and the questionnaire but literature review not
excluded. The qualitative method or approach is used in this research because of a number of
reasons mainly:
The analysis itself is exploratory in nature, and the researcher did not know if everything
in the field of the study, therefore, he decided to use the interview as the source of primary data
for the data collection. Again the qualitative research is also regarded as a subjective which
always evaluate one's opinion and the views which concerns the topic of study (Green and
Thorogood 2018). The questions are specified together with the answer on a plain paper or any
writing pads inform of a questionnaire and the respondents have to choose from them (Sevigny
et al 2016). The interviews are the utilized to gather information and data that will be useful in
the evaluation of the response of the respondents such as the doctors and Nurses for this research
study. The research of the information gathered is then analyzed to give the desired information
on the Alzheimer Diseases and the related infections.
Due to the limitation of time face to face method of the interview will not be used. The
questions will be sent to the concern Authority to avoid any waste of time. The items will also be
addressed via email and telephone interviews also conducted for the doctors or nurses who will
not be around at the time of the study. The problems within the questionnaire should not contain
ant leading problem which may lead to the massive rejection by the respondents during the
interview (Bowling 2014). The chosen qualitative technique also has numerous advantages over
other approaches in the field of research. Some of the strengths of the qualitative approach over
different methods in the study of AD disease include the following: subject materials can be
evaluated by the researcher before the study, the research framework can sometimes be based on

the available and the incoming data as opposed to other techniques, the answer received from the
approach is mainly based on the human experiences and also through the observation which
makes it so unique as compared to different approaches, there is also a predictive quality to the
data gathered and the approach also operates under the laid down structures (Sperling et al 2011).
In addition to the above strengths, the complexities are even in cooperated within the
study generated and also the in qualitative approach the researcher is in the open ended way in
his research. When the researcher is fully prepared he will be able to get the in depth information
and data from the respondents since the approach is also regarded as one of the techniques which
is characterized by the emotions (Creswell and Creswell 2017); the respondents are always
willing to give his best since the method is mainly based on the human experience. For the case
of this study, some respondents to be interviewed include the following: Care givers, Alzheimer
Doctors Nurses and the victims of the disease.
CHAPTER THREE
RESEARCH METHODOLY
AND DESIGN
3.0 Introduction
The chapter contains the research methods and designs related to the project proposal.
These include the following: Methodology, research sample, research participants, and data
analysis among others.
3.1 Methodology
Document Page
Research Proposal For Alzheimer’s Disease9
The qualitative technique is regarded as one of the approaches to this study (Salazare et al
2015). The research is seen as one of the methods that enable the respondents to participate by
speaking out their minds both emotionally fully and while sober. The researcher feels that by
engaging directly with the respondents, he is able to gather additional information as opposed to
the quantitative technique approach. The approach is either implemented by face - to - face
interview or questionnaire depending on choice of the leading researcher (Morse 2016).
3.2 Research Design
The prospective qualitative design will be conducted to meet the aims and objectives of
the study. The semi structured guides to the study interview will also be prepared with the open
ended questions and probes. The guides are developed to be verbally delivered. The first
interview is to be conducted through the distribution if the questionnaire to the respondents and
each of the will be required to answer by having the assurance that the ethical consideration and
the consent considered. The second interview is be conducted for the respondents who will not
be present at the time of interview; a phone call is to be made and the interview to last for 45
minutes or less .This is considered useful because it provides the additional information about
the Alzheimer Disease and the prevention.
3.3 Research participants
The participants of the research shall comprise of the following people: 12 Caregivers, 4
professional doctors and 4 Nurses .The following people shall be given a questionnaire for which
to fill.
3.4 Sample
For one to be part of the interview, the potential respondents have to meet the following
requirements for the study: must be a caregiver in one of the leading hospitals that deals with the
Document Page

Alzheimer Disease. Must be a professional Doctor in the field of study, must have an operational
phone number and finally he must be able to speak in English and also of a sound mind. The
respondents must also know how to read and write. The total eligible number of the study should
be at most 20 in number, the age bracket of 25 and above .The respondents at the age bracket
given above are all perceived to be a working class .Any post interview is to be conducted within
a period of 6 days.
3.5 Data collection procedure
The list of the respondents is to be validated after the sampling .It is then scrutinized by
the research leading team who will then meet the respondents before the actual study begins. The
respondents are trained on the requirements of the study by ensuring them that their consent and
ethical considerations is not abused. Before the actual research begins the assistant researcher
should ensure that the respondents chosen for the research met all the required qualifications.
From the questionnaire, they are advised not to indicate their names in the questionnaire rather
write the gender/sex and the current position they are holding in the area of service. After the
collection and the analysis of the data, the entire used questionnaire shall remain with the leading
researcher after which they shall be discarded for the purpose of confidentiality. A phone call
interview is also to be done for the respondents who shall have not availed themselves during the
time of study. Finally the respondents will again be reminded to read the instruction fully and
ensure each questionnaire is answered by one individual to avoid the error in the analysis.

4.2 Ethical considerations
Law and ethical consideration is one of the key issues to be looked into for the success of
the research. The law covers all information related to data consent of the respondents and the
general rules of the research (Norton et al 2014). The content of the questionnaire shall have the
information which caters for the respondent’s consent where they will be required to indicate
their age, gender/sex and the area of sector from which he works. No respondent will be required
to write his or her name on the questionnaire this will boost their confidentiality. After the
interview the entire questionnaire shall be collected and the data will be under the custody of the
lead researcher; no questionnaire should be left behind with any respondent. After the analysis of
the data no result or findings will be leaked to the third party as stated in the research document

policy that all information remains with the lead researcher. Each respondent is to be given a
question with written consent of the study. Any respondent who feels that he should not be able
to comply with rules of research is also advised to be free to leave. Finally all the research
guidelines must always have the laws and ethical considerations which govern it during the time
of study. The questionnaire should have good grammar and technical languages should be
avoided at all cost.
CHAPTER FIVE
CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION
5.0 Conclusions
The timely diagnosis of the Alzheimer disease at the first time when people are in need of
help is being worsen because many of the infected persons loses their cognition, behavior and
functionality of the brain. But diagnosis at the middles stage of the disease can offer the benefits
to both the patients and the caregivers especially in the time of obtaining treatment to control the
symptoms and signs if the disease and also to avoid medication which may worsen the condition.
The permanent advancing plan should be put in place put in place to help make all the end of life
by avoiding unhealthy lifestyles by seeking the better medical attention and care. Alzheimer
disease is considered as one of the dangerous diseases which requires proper cure and
prevention. For this reason different nations and health organizations should finance and support
different research to help find a solution to the challenges.
5.1 Recommendations
The research proposal is considered as one of the guidelines to be used for the further research.
Different Nations and healthcare organizations should declare the Alzheimer Disease as one of
