2AMERICAN HISTORY
Racial discrimination hs been a part of history since times in Memorium. Racism is a social evil
that destroyed the ethics of people and also makes them hate each other for no reason but only
because of their racial differences (Santiago). The same happened in America and huge
discrimination and war were going on between people based on their racial and social
differences.
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land, (Zinn)
The two lines from this chapter talk about the hard times that were inflicted upon people based
on their skin color. The white skin supremacy was growing everywhere and the negros or the
black-skinned ones had to face many tortures and discriminations. Slave trade became popular
and as they were of black skin they had to face discrimination at every front. Right from
schooling opportunities to getting recruited in some prestigious job position. In the army, white-
skinned people were hired first and were given better opportunities whereas the black-skinned
people were the ones to face all hardships. This is evident from the line 'They were the last hired,
the first fired’
Not only is human labor bartered and sold for the slave wage, but human love is also a
marketable commodity.
This is talking about the barter system that developed. However, the Negros or the black-skinned
people were the ones who did not get any useful things in return except for insult. Women were
also forced into prostitution and they had no other option but to opt for this as they needed
someone for sustaining.
