Amgen Inc is a biotechnology company that has been in operation since 1980. The
company has approximately 20,000 staff members in 100 countries worldwide. The
company majors in fields that have high unmet medical needs such as oncology, nephrology,
cardiovascular disease, neuroscience, bone health, and Inflammation.
Part A
Corporate Social Responsibility
Amgen's responsibility is to make a positive difference in the world beyond
manufacturing vital medicines. Amgen's staff strive to provide solutions with the best
possible health outcomes. Responsibility is governed at the highest levels whereby the
executives report the progress to the Corporate Responsibility and Compliance Committee
(CRCC). Amgen's Sustainability Council provides guidance on how to implement
environmental sustainability and social responsibility. The company's social responsibility
includes community volunteering, supporting science education, assisting qualifying patients
with medical needs access to medicine and carrying operations in an environmentally friendly
manner. In 2017, for instance, the company's staff donated funds to support communities
affected by the hurricane Maria that devastated Puerto Rico. They donated a generator to
supply the local hospital, the dialysis clinic and grocery with electricity (Amgen, 2017).
Ethical Findings
Amgen's mission to serve patients is supported by conducting business in an ethical
manner. Amgen's leadership is committed to promoting ethical culture. The company shares
data and proved transparency while carrying out clinical trials. Amgen's code of conduct
enables staff members in different departments worldwide, do the right thing. The company
does training on the code of conduct to its staff annually. The company shares information
with stakeholders and collaborators regarding operations. The company also follows the

"Code on Interactions with Healthcare Professionals.” Amgen’s staff have strong ethics
where they give back to the community.
Part B
Amgen's commitment to increasing access to healthcare and affordability would
probably mean an act of long-term strategy for profits rather than goodwill. Amgen is a
company that has responsibilities to its staff and shareholders. And the responsibilities mean
that the employees are paid their dues and partners get their share. While doing this the
operations of the company must go on even in the long-term. This scenario puts executives in
a no-win situation whereby critics demand more "corporate social responsibility" and
investors' pressure to maximize profits (Gardberg et al., 2019). Contributions of Amgen to
the communities and supporting education may act to promote goodwill among customers
and employees and at the same time improve its image to enhance marketing in the future.
Improving the affordability of medicine to patients is an act of empowerment. Most
customers chase quality which is always expensive. Therefore, Amgen increasing healthcare
affordability will empower the consumer and in the long-run increase their customer base and
thus profits.
