ESSAY ANALYSIS
The essay is authored by Andrew Braaksma, a former Michigan University student in 2005. The
essay titled’ Some Lessons from the Assembly Line’ describes a student’s experiences of
working as a factory worker or as a ‘blue-collar’ as described by the author (Newsweek.com
2018).
The essay brings forth two major discourses- one that concerns the students in general
and other that concerns the ‘white-collar’ workers. Braaksma very precisely describes the pain
that factory workers go through while sharing his own experience at the assembly line. He
describes the long hours of pain that he went through while working at one of the assembly lines
as a part timer.
He draws an indirect comparison between the blue-collar that is factory workers’ job and
white-collar that is the job of higher executives. According to the author, the factory workers are
made to work for longer hours in difficult and inhuman conditions. To add to this pain, they are
paid a wage much less than what their work deserves.
Braaksma also tried to advise the students to pay attention to what their teachers teach
them and value education. Students coming from wealthy backgrounds often fail to realize the
worth of education, as they are seen bunking classes and enjoying the facilities of the school or
university campus.
The essay is directed mainly towards the students and indirectly towards those who attain
higher position without doing much hard work. It cites practical examples and experiences of
