Ode: To Autumn written by John Keats is apparently a simple poem which appreciates
the season of autumn, the poet beautifully describes the season weaving a beautiful picturesque
of the nature during the season of autumn. In the beginning of the poem, the poet calls autumn
“Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness”, “Close bosom friend of the maturing sun” and
describes how the earth rejoices with happiness and fertility. The different parts of the poem
helps in creating the overall meaning by interweaving the words used in each stanza, although
the poem begins with a joyous tone, it become gloomy in the middle and the underlying theme of
the poem comes into light (Khan). The poet while describing the end of an autumn day also
makes the readers understand the joyous season of autumn will eventually end and it will bring
winter the season of cold, illness and death.
The main theme of the poem suggests that life will go and the moments of joys are
fleeting just like the brief period of autumn, which feels away quickly paving ways to winter,
which signifies death, loss and sadness. This theme can be easily connected with the daily
lives of the human beings as everyone can connect with the theme that a life ends and a new
one begins in this way life continues (Roe). The poem is divided into three stanzas each
having eleven lines. The poet builds this theme into the poem by describing a beautiful
autumn day where the fruits are ripe, bees are buzzing, the hazel shells are plumped with sweet
kernel inside. Later when the day comes to an end the poet uses phrases like “ soft dying day”,
“wailful choir the small gnats mourn” to signify the end of the day and that all good things
comes to an end giving way to loss, sadness and mourning. In this poem the poet ends with a
calm and accepting tone as if he is ready to embrace the inevitable with grace.
