In “The secret life of Walter
Mitty” Ben Stiller both directs
and play the lead role in
following James Thurber short
story which made Walter
Mitty, a well known house
hold name and a “byword for
dithering fantasists”. In the
following movie, “The secret
life of Walter Mitty” Ben
Stiller character Walter Mitty
has a profession of a picture
researcher at the Life magazine
in New York, United States Of
America. “Walter Mitty use to
spend his days gazing at other
people’s thrilling lives through
a loupe and dreaming up
adventures of his own”.
The viewers could experience
the Walter Mitty`s fantasies
which gave to the “summer-
blockbuster graphics, but they
slip past in that odd,
lightweight way that
daydreams do, and the effect is
perversely convincing”. The
best one probably is the first
one – the railway station scene.
In the early morning scene
when Walter Mitty had
interrupted a telephone call in
order to jump into a burning
building just to save a three
legged dog which actually
belonged to Cheryl Melhoff , a
character in the movie which
was played by Kristen Wiig.
(Cheryl Melhoff was the co
worker at the office of Walter
Mitty. Cheryl Melhoff was also
the secret crush of the Walter
Mitty.) Talking about that
particular scene the viewer was
suddenly snapped or taken
back to the railway platform
where Walter Mitty was still
standing. The building which
was supposed to be on fire was
still intact, the telephone was
still ringing while the train had
already left the railway
platform without Walter Mitty.
As shown during the year
1947, the first screen version
with Danney Kaye,though all
those fantasies , all those
imaginations were soon
replaced by real life situation,
real life spills. As a result, the
story, the movie soon became a
story of great escapades. In the
following movie, Walter Mitty
gets inspires and motivated by
the Cheryl Melhoff and soon
goes off to a international
“goose chase” around the
world in order to find a
missing negative that contains
the cover image for the Life
magazine’s final issue.
Lots of things that were present
in the “The Secret Life of
Walter Mitty” were supposed
to be inspirational –“the
purposeful, slow-motion shots
of people running, the resonant
rock music, the mountain
vistas” – that would leave it
viewer into a feeling of
sublimation and inspiration.
20th Century Fox would hope
to have a good Christmas with
“Walter’s spirit-quest” just as
they did with Ang Lee’s Life
of Pi in last year Christmas.
