SOCIOLOGY
Sociology includes the aspect of summarizing logic and observations into a universal
perspective to reveal a standardized meaning. From the classwork, we have discussed various
elements that support the field of sociology. The book looks at some of the collective human
activities and behaviors that contribute to the unit of sociology. The book has also explained how
sociology works as a science. Most of the time, we tend to articulate some of the human behavior
activities that conform to the principles of sociology. The author supported the issue of sociology
by discussing critical topics that make sense of identity when one is reading (Tepperman, &
Albanese, 2017 p.35). Some of these topics analyzed by the author include methods and science
of sociology, the issue of gender and sexuality. Also, the author focused on the social class in
society, the idea of media and culture together with crime and deviance in society. In the last
sections of the book, the author has elaborated more on the fundamental elements in society.
Some of these include the aspect of families and education, the idea of socialization, and the
points supporting culture. All these topics helped the author to support some of the logical
elements within society.
Concerning this paper, the purpose is to articulate how these topics discussed in the book
correlates with the film selected. Therefore, to come up with a simplified discussion, the paper
will support one of the sociological films that correspond to some of these elements outlined in
the book. The film selected is known as “The Wife.” It is one of the 2017 best films that
advocates for some of the sociological behaviors we have in society (Coleman, 2017). Jane
Anderson wrote the film, and it has stars such as Jonathan Pryce. Also, the movie started with a
woman who asks herself a couple of questions before she went to meet her husband (Tepperman,
& Albanese, 2017 p.125). According to the book, science and methods have articulated some of
the human activities as well as behaviors that contribute to the field of sociology. The film has

supported some of the relevant topics we discussed in the class. Some of the ideas outlined in the
movie include the issue of education that also applies to the book. It has also analyzed topics
such as social class and ethnicity. These are some of the problems the author in the book
emphasized when explaining the idea of sociology. Besides, elements such as gender, identity,
power, and concepts of feminism are relevant to this film. All these themes in the movie
correspond to the work of the author in the book.
According to the book, we have various elements that are attributed to the concept of sex,
gender, and gender identity, as illustrated in the film. The author points out that sex includes the
biological difference that can be physically observed in males, intersex, and females in society.
To the author, the issue of sex is the only element that creates biological differences in human
beings. On the other hand, the book has articulated the idea of gender and gender identity. The
author describes gender as an aspect that contains those elements, such as the attitudes and
beliefs that we have on the aspect of femininity and muscularity (Tepperman, & Albanese, 2017
p.55). Besides, the idea of gender identity includes the biological assumptions and social
identifications that bring a sense of belonging to the concept of sex in human beings. Therefore,
all these subjects explained in the book tend to concur with what is happening in the film.
From the film, we tend to realize some of the stereotyping activities revealed by the
characters. The film indicates how it easy to understand and recognize the differences between
gender and sex. It is evident from the movie that most of the people have been receiving social
stigma and also threats due to their gender. Furthermore, elements such as discrimination are
supported in the film. The overall representation of the male character is the only dominating sex
in a society that brings some questions in the movie. The book has illustrated how some
communities have valued men, thus leaving behind other genders, such as women in society

(Tepperman, & Albanese, 2017 p.205). Through this analogy, it becomes difficult for women to
occupy the same levels as men. The film is controlled by a dominant section of groups of men.
The part is in the position to command the women all the time. On the other hand, females are
obliged to comply with the guidelines and regulations formulated by the men. From the author of
the book, it is often that we have an aspect of discrimination and threats in society.
According to the book, gender roles have changed. We have some of the groups that have
categorized some of the functions to be performed by females and others belonging to men. The
author of the books seems to support how these cultural traits, to some point, bring social
cohesion and also sometimes as the channels perpetuating the issue of social differences. In
connection to the film, one can identify how the concept of feminism sometimes correlates to the
question of gender roles as expounded by the author in the book. According to Joan, the main
character of the film, it is evident that there is always that greater woman in society (Tepperman,
& Albanese, 2017 p.125). At this point, the character tries to illustrate how the issue of feminism
flood societies. The lady is working hard enough to change those cultural norms that were highly
bewildering his husband all the time. The art gives chronological assumptions on how equality
plays a crucial role in society. Joan seems to sacrifice herself to handle those complex tasks that
were believed to be for males in some communities.
On the other hand, the book supports the idea of language and culture. Culture includes
all accepted behaviors and practices that bring people together. From the classwork, several
societies have unique features that describe their culture. Most of the values and norms contained
by organizations help in building a collective community. In the film, the issue of women
empowerment seems to be a value accepted by the characters (Coleman, 2017). It is noted the
main character of the film supported the idea of empowerment and gender equality. One can

identify how the lady used to talk with her husband on matters related to power. Joan is ready to
mobilize other characters to fight on eliminating those norms and values that could hinder the
empowerment of women in society. Joan has not been on good terms with his husband. The
reason behind this disagreement is on how Joe, the husband, seems to be obsessed with the
cultural norms and values of his society. To him, women should not be giving the same priorities
as men when it comes to power. Joan needs the husband to respect her, and she is given the same
positions the norms gives to the men. From the book, we tend to see how subcultures also are the
barriers to social inclusion. In most of the societies, we have the subcultures that when not
keenly evaluated and analyzed, can induce social differences.
To sum up, the sociology contains logics and observations that culminates to various
social elements. The book has outlined how some virtues that are relevant to the unit of
sociology. In the film, topics such as culture, gender, and equality reflect some of the social
attributes relevant necessary for society. The point is that the film reveals the themes
systematically learned from the book. The characters also in the group perform various roles and
activities that mirror precisely the essential topics the author has supported in the book.
