Exploring Windows Troubleshooting: Boot Options and Event Viewer Logs

This document addresses Windows troubleshooting, focusing on the implications of using the Last Known Good Configuration, the necessity of opening the command prompt with administrative privileges, and the interpretation of errors in the Event Viewer Log. It suggests a series of steps to troubleshoot network errors, particularly those related to network drivers, including updating drivers from authenticated sources. Implications of selecting the Last Known Good Configuration (Advanced) option
The “Last Known Good Configuration” is a built in recovery option available in all
version of Windows. It is found in the Advanced Boots Option menu. It is particularly helpful
when a pc need to be recovered that is not working properly.
When the option is selected, a request is made to boot windows into “Last Known
Good Configuration.” Most of the time, when changes are made to CurrentControlSet and if
the system does not work properly, it is possible to access old configuration as Windows keep
copy of the configuration in the backed-up copy. Hence when the “Last Known Good
Configuration” is selected, rather than pointing CurrentControlSet to default
CurrentControlSet001, a mapping from SYSTEM\
CurrentControlSet to CurrentControlSet002 is made by Windows. As there was no issue with
that before, it is definitely going to work and ensures successful booting of the PC.
Reason to open the command prompt with administrative privileges.
Sometimes application in Windows need administrative access to execute. It is not
possible to run this kind of application without normal account. However if the command
prompt is opened with administrative privileges, it is possible to execute administrative
commands. This kind of commands are not possible to execute in Windows if the command
prompt is not opened with administrative privileges. Hence sometimes it is needed to open
the command prompt with administrative privileges.
Errors shown on the Event Viewer Log
Event viewer lists a lot of events that is executed in the PC or laptop running windows
operating system. Whenever there is any occurs in the PC or laptop, it is listed in the event
viewer. One of these errors are network related error. For example whenever network related
error occurs like network is not connecting to the server, it is listed in the even viewer and
logged as Failure Audit event.
Steps for Identification and assumptions for troubleshooting process
One of the possible reason that the network error occurs is due to problem in network
driver. If this is the cause then following steps are recommended:

 The first thing that is to look for if the driver is updated or not.
 Next it has to be checked if the driver is downloaded from the authenticate sources.
Sometimes it also creates problems if the driver is not proper.
In order to update the driver the following steps have to be followed:
 Open Device Manager
 Look for network adapter
 Right click on Update Driver Software
 Chose Browse my computer for driver software
 Click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer
 It need to be made sure that Show compatible hardware option is not checked
 From the dropdown list, the manufacturer for the driver is selected and then the
driver that needs to be installed needs to be selected
 Once the driver is installed, the computer needs to be restarted
The assumptions that have been made here are:
 Network issue is only due to the driver problem
 Driver works properly after installation
 Proper installation guides have been followed
