As stated by Webb, the transformation or the evolution that the genre of photography had
undergone over the years becomes apparent when the design principles or the formal elements
which are being used by the contemporary artists are being taken into account. Dabner, Stewart
and Vickress are of the viewpoint that the innovative usage of the different design principles or
the formal elements like line, form, shape, texture, color, pattern and shape had not only enabled
the artists to adequate capture diverse ideas but also to enhance the visual appeal of their
artworks as well. Andy Warhol’s “Sarah Bernhardt” is an important one in this regard since it
displays the effective usage of the design principles of line, color and pattern. Andy Warhol’s
“Sarah Bernhardt” (1980) is often considered to be one of the masterpieces of the modern
artworks and offers an insight into the turbulent life as well as the thought process of the French
actress Sarah Bernhardt (Artsy.Net). The concerned artwork is redolent with different lines
which often take the shape of a rectangle to highlight the diverse shades or the thought process of

elucidate the same idea. For example, it had been seen that the artwork consists of different
patterns or shapes which as a matter of fact are in synchronicity with the central idea that it tries
to represent, that is, to offer a complete insight into the life and the thought process of Sarah
Bernhardt. In this connection, it needs to be said that the effective usage of these design
principles had not only enabled the artist to drive home the central message of the artwork
adequately but also to substantially enhance the visual appeal of the artwork as well.
