Annotated Bibliography: Exploring Social Policy Research Trends

This annotated bibliography presents a collection of five articles exploring various facets of social policy. The first article examines the impact of social and emotional learning (SEL) programs on students. The second article investigates the correlation between immigration and public support for social policies. The third article analyzes the relationship between social policy shortcomings and mortality rates in the US. The fourth article studies the impact of social policy changes on household food insecurity in British Columbia. Finally, the fifth article explores consumer attitudes towards new energy vehicles' policies and their impact on purchase intention in China. Each article is summarized, and its key findings are highlighted to provide a comprehensive overview of the research landscape in social policy.

This study proposes an approach that should be followed by schools and by following
this approach teaching will be integrated. This integration is achieved in teaching process by
following social and emotional skills (SEL) program. The SEL program is very important and
it results in managing emotions and stay focused and how to respect adults thus uplifting
development of students (Bouffard, 2012).
SEL program is introduced with a view that it will affect the children in their earliest
years of growing process and continues till adolescence. This kind of program is proposed
because children spend a considerable amount of time in schools and school plays an
significant role in social and emotional development. Healthy implementation of SEL
programs associated with constructive changes in children. This article uses meta-analysis
method and findings from the analysis shows that SEL participants results in better social
emotional skill, behavior and performance. This kind of result is derived because teaching
staffs have conducted SEL program in a proper way. SEL program is recommended to the
education sector because of its healthy development of children.
The above article proved to be a useful one because it shows that by implementing a
program, positive results are achieved which is very important for an economy to move
towards path of development. This program is targeting children who are future of any
country.
By conducting survey on the above mentioned article provides a ground to get a better
understanding of how a simple approach can change the view towards social policy. SEL

program though a simple but time-efficient, cost efficient, and integrated with academic
curricula.

David Bradya, R. F. (2014). Does Immigration Undermine Public Support for Social
Policy? American Sociological Review, 17-42.
Correlation between immigration and social welfare gained importance in recent
years. There is a belief that immigration undermines government support for social policy
and this study mainly addresses this issue on whether immigration undermines public support
or not. Rise in immigration is one of the attribute behind growing population and growing
population affects economy in terms of reduced GDP, increasing unemployment, low
availability of land for housing in capital cities and low output of country.
Various studies are conducted to find effect of immigration on public support. Some
of the studies suggest that public support is eroded by immigration (Mau Steffen, 2009). This
particular article in order to find the consequence of immigration on public support used six
welfare attitudes and three measures of immigration. Data of International Social Survey
Program (ISSP) is used. By using multi-level and two-way fixed-effects models, findings of
the analysis shows that result fall short to support the generic hypothesis that public support
is undermined due to immigration. Thus the findings shows that in born citizens of the
country undermines the welfare of the economy not the net immigrated ones. Hence, the
article suggests that immigration have positive effects on welfare of the country and it is not
immigration, other factors are far more important for public support of social policy.
In depth study of the article helped to get an idea about how immigrants affect public
support. There are studies which shows that inborn residents tend to affect the long term

residence (DeWaardet al. 2012), by undermining support from government. While short term
growth is affected by immigrants (Raymer., 2012). Thus it is quite understandable that social
policy support for the resident to compensate for their sense of insecurity and immigrants
may not benefit substantially from public services.
Studying this article proved to be quite interesting to get an idea whether immigrants
affect countries social support or not. While adopting a policy for public, this arena of
immigrants plays a vital role.

Jason Beckfield, C. B. (2016). Shorter lives in stingier states: Social policy shortcomings
help explain the US mortality disadvantage. Social Science & Medicine, 30-38.
Higher GDP is not enough for a country to move towards development, all the
indicators of development should be taken care of. One such indicator is mortality rate. The
US has a mortality disadvantage with respect to political and economic peer group of rich
democracies. This disadvantage could be a result of faults in social policy of the country.
This paper attempts to analyze how social policy affects mortality rate at macro level. US
mortality disadvantage grabbed the attention for structuring policies further (Woolf and Aron,
2013).
All the studies regarding US mortality disadvantage has been conducted in micro
level, but this article focuses on macro level study. This paper mainly address two issues-long
term trends in life expectancy and review of social policy of 18 richest democracy and second
issue is involvement of social policy of US on mortality disadvantage. For addressing the two
issues time series cross section analysis is used from 1970 to 2010. Result of this study shows
that over a period of time life expectancy in the U.S have decreased when compared with rich

democracies. Thus countries that provide higher income benefits have low poverty levels and
better population health (Nelson and Fritzell 2014). The result of the study also shows that
there is strong relationship between welfare generosity and life expectancy.
The above article on disadvantage of mortality in US is very informative because it
gives a glimpse of the economy at macro level. Result obtained in the study is also consistent
with other studies. This article rightly points out lack of government intervention on policy.
The study lacks to address individual level mortality data which should be integrated with
individual level policy coverage in order to asses’ improvement in public health.
The article is relevant one for studying social policy because it directly points out the
lack of social policy in addressing problem regarding mortality which is a important indicator
of growth.

Na Li, N. D. (2016). The impact of changes in social policies on household food
insecurity in British Columbia, 2005–2012. Preventive Medicine , 151-58.
Food insecurity in rich countries is growing at a significant level. This kind of issue
which is a contradictory one is not new over the years there are several countries which is
facing. Provision for health care and budgets is burdened by food insecurity in Canada and
this matter of food insecurity is a matter of provincial government. This paper aims to study
socio demographic and sequential patterning of food insecurity of British Columbia from
2005-2012. It also determines the impact of Rental Assistance Program on food insecurity
among specific groups.
This article uses data from Canadian Community Health Surveys. Regression analysis
is conducted to obtain result from the data to identify trends in food insecurity among

subgroups these groups differentiated in terms of income and housing tenure. Models are
developed in the study to explore impact of policy changes on food insecurity and this food
insecurity is differentiated in terms of moderate and severe food insecurities. Result of the
study shows that overall food insecurity decreased by social assistance but severe insecurity
remains unchanged, and RAP has effect on food insecurity of rental households. Findings
shows that food insecurity is sensitive to social assistance recipients and highlight that
severity of food insecurity should be examined properly.
In country like Canada, food insecurity is monitored at household level and the main
reason is financial constraints. This food insecurity adversely affects health across life cycle
(Gundersen &Ziliak, 2015). Thus addressing the issue of food insecurity by this paper is very
important and reliable one because result of the findings is consistent one. The study of this
paper is useful one since it addresses the issue by showing effect of government policy on
food insecurity.
Food insecurity is domain of social policy. If policies are not implemented in a proper
way then huge problem arises. This article is a valuable one as shows gap in policy of
government and how it fails to address problem of food insecurity within country.

Yiping Lou, W. W. (2017). Customers' attitude on new energy vehicles’ policies and
policy impact on customers' purchase intention. Energy Procedia , 2187 – 2193.
Air pollution plays a vital role on growth process of a country. Country like China is
victim of this problem mainly its capital economic circle. Pollution in cities like Beijing,
Tianjin mainly created by vehicle, so the government is focusing on ways which can reduce
this pollution. One such way is use of new energy vehicles, this vehicles run by rechargeable

battery. Government is putting huge efforts to increase use of NEV in order to reduce
pollution. This paper aims to explore consumer’s attitude towards usage of NEV. It also
explores policies implemented on usage of NEV.
Using consumer survey, the paper uses statistical analysis to explain consumer’s
attitude towards NEV. The result of the study shows that consumers favor electric vehicles
but policies regarding usage of electric cars is insufficient and policy preferences also
different in different cities. Policies by government mainly support behavioral intention of
consumers by reducing perceived risks of consumers and the constructive effects are
transmitted through purchase willingness. Effect of policies on perceived risk also varies
because there is presence correlation between perceived risks and policies.
This study explores a topic which promotes green transportation. With growing
population green transportation is seemed to give right solution. Thus topic of promoting
green revolution is very important nowadays. Increasing use of NEV is thus important topic
and so government of China have implemented series of policies to encourage usage of NEV
(Zheng SM, 2015). The result of the study is reliable and consistent one.
The article on usage of NEV is significant because it shows how policies if effectively
implemented have the capability of reducing pollution and combats economy against sluggish
growth. Thus this article helps to understand the issue on social policy.
