Annotated Bibliography: Communication in Nursing Practice

The study described the efficacy of a good communication between the nurses and their
patients in case of individualized care. The study used various previous scholarly studies to
determine the principles of effective communication and the proper way of speaking with
their patient in order to build up a proper therapeutic relationship with them. The study
decided that in order to make a good communication, the nurses should understand the
perspective of their patients and they must also display sincerity, kindness and courtesy,
when trying to help their patients. The other factors the nurses must remember is the
confidentiality regarding the condition of the patient, necessary language skills and using the
proper experiences, when making an attempt to properly communicate with their patients.
The article decided that communication is a very important ongoing process, which
involves expressing the opinion of one party and listening to that opinion by the other party.
An effective communication helps in developing a good interpersonal relationship between
those two parties. The reason for making an effective communication with the patient is to
make the patient feel comfortable with the nursing staff. It is a bidirectional process, which
helps the nurses develop a proper therapeutic relationship with their patients.
The target audience of this article was nurses, who works in a professional setting.
The article described the needs of making effective communication t between the patients and
the nurses.

The study was focused on the importance of the effective communication in nursing
in order to improve the performances of the nurses themselves. The study was focused on the
nursing staffs, who worked in the ICU. It was previously established that the ineffective
communication increases the instances of burn out in the nurses, which affects the
performances of the nurses, which is directly associated with the quality of care provided by
the nurses. The study found that the nurses, who are experienced, had a greater educational
qualification and older are more competent in making effective communications. The
research study involved a cross-sectional study design and the sample size was 197. It was a
qualitative study, which concluded that it is very important for the nurses to develop the
competency in making professional communication in order to improve their performances in
providing quality care. The nurses should be provided with proper training to improve their
skills for making proper communication.
The study concluded that the ICU nurses must be provided with proper trainings in
order to improve their skills in communication. The nurses who work in the intensive care are
supposed to deliver a quality care to their patients. In order to achieve that the nursing staffs
should be provided with proper training.
The targeted audience of this article were the authorities of the healthcare centers and
the nurses who work in the ICU. The aim of this study was to determine how the

This scholarly article explored the importance of using effective interpersonal
communication by the nurses. The article used the Maslow’s hierarchy of human needs in
order to describe the importance of the effective communication in nursing. After that the
article explored the possible variables that might be influencing the level of effectiveness of
the communication. The article also discussed the possible consequences and causes of an
ineffective communication along with discussing the examples and cures of the problems.
After that how the taboo associated with different cultures and organisations affect the
efficacy of communication is discussed in the article. The article discussed the topic using
various literatures. The experiences of the healthcare providers and the authors of multiple
strategies, which can be considered as a practical approach, were also considered, when
explaining the topic.
The article found that interpersonal communication is a very important and intimate
human activity that affects the psychological health of an individual to a high level. It also
found that there are various external and internal variables that are responsible for an
effective or ineffective communication. There various causes for ineffective communication

such as cultural, familial, social or organisational issues, poor skills in conflict management,
lack of sense in maintaining boundaries when communicating and various others.
The intended audience of this article was the professional nurses. The article aimed
for improving their professional life along with their personal life by implementing the
practice of making effective interpersonal communication with their patients.
Recommendations for Practice:
The professional communication is very important in nursing practice. The
advantages include the lowered burn-out instances among the nursing staffs themselves along
with the improved satisfaction level in the patients and their families. It has been found from
various studies that the effective communication is important for delivering a quality care in
the patients. The effective communication helps in improving the physical and mental health
of the patients since a proper understanding of the condition of the patients is developed by
this approach in the nursing staffs. There is also a development of a proper therapeutic
relationship between the nurses and their patients achieved by a successful communication.
The ineffective communication leads to increasing various risks in the patients. The risks
associated with the ineffective communication are the increased level of anxiety and
dissatisfaction in the patients, risks of medication error and various others, which might be
contributing in increasing the rate of mortality in the patients. It is important for delivering
individualized or patient centered care as well. The nurses develop competency in effective
communication with age, experience and proper training. The effective communication
involves listening to the patient, understanding their perspective and respond to them without
affecting their moral values and beliefs negatively. The nurses must also display proper level
of kindness and empathy when making communications with their patients and their families.
