Montgomery College: Costume and Set Design Analysis of Antigone

This report provides an analysis of the costume and set design in Sophocles' play, Antigone. Antigone
•This is a play by Sophocles who based this play on the Greek tradition of oral play.
• this is a tragedy where Antigone will rise in the power and die young.
•This play gives us insight about the power play that is attachted with the throne.
•Not only are Characters or the direction of the play lucrative, but the costume
designs and the stage design plays in important part in conveying the message to the
audience.

Costume design
•It is important to understand the role of costume design. If the costume of the
characters are analyzed properly then the same play can be recreated with the same
amount of vigor and talent.
•Costume design reveals the nature of characters, the sudden turn the character will be
taking, it also conveys about the mood or the emotional turbulence through which the
character is going through.
•Thus costumes bring out the symbolic nature of play and should not be undermined .

Set design
•Similar to the Costume design, the set design plays an more effective role in the play
because it control the physical move net of the characters. Thus the incident gets its real
feel through the set designs.
•The emotion of the characters gets more pronounces through the set design, for instance
the character is morose and is clouded with ones thought, the set design can show that the
nature is takings its wrath by thunderbolt of heavy raining. It can show mere drizzling if the
characters are just sorrowful. Therefore depending upon the instentity or the nature of
the play.
