INNOVATION 2
Introduction
In today’s competitive business world, organisations rely on innovation in order to
generate a competitive advantage in the market. Innovative solutions enable companies to
overcome key obstacles in their success and find creative ways of producing their products
that are cost effective and efficient (Reed, Storrud-Barnes, & Jessup, 2012). The objective of
this report is to analyse a type of innovation and evaluate the major milestone of an
innovation. Apple iPhone is selected as the product innovation in this report; subtypes of this
innovation along with its major milestones will be analysed in this report. The particular area
of this innovation on which this report will focus on includes design innovation in Apple
iPhone. The impact of this innovation on organisations will be analysed and three
recommendations for future developments of this innovation will be given in this report as
well.
Sub-types of Innovation
There are four types of innovation which includes product, process, marketing and
organisational innovation (Kim & Lui, 2015). Apple iPhone is a product innovation which
was launched by Apple in June 2007. Apple is an American-based multinational company
which was founded in 1976; the headquarters of the company is situated in Cupertino,
California, the United States (US). The company is known for many innovations; however,
one of the biggest innovations given by Apple to the world is iPhone. It was first launched by
Steve Jobs in 2007 after which it shaped the smartphone industry by quickly becoming most
selling product of Apple (Molla, 2017). It is a part of product innovation which enabled
Apple to become a market leader by selling millions of iPhones across the globe.
iPhone has become hugely successful due to its design innovation and its ability to
perform different tasks efficiently. Before the launch of iPhone, smartphones were clunky
and they had complete keyboards and small screen which was not a friendly user experience
for customers (Cao, 2018). Apple designed the iPhone to make it one of the most elegant and
simple smartphone that was easy to use by customers while also being an immersive device.
Since its launch, Apple has continuously improved the design of iPhones by making it
more users friendly and capable of performing complex tasks and processes. The camera of

by going to great length (Misra, Cheng, Genevie, & Yuan, 2016). At the time of its launch,
iPhone offered many design innovative features to its customers that were not available in
other smartphones such as multi-touch, web browser, maps, on-screen keyboard and others.
The software capabilities of iPhone allowed Apple to launch App Store from which users can
download millions of applications for different functions in iPhone which improves its
usability (Ketchell, 2017).
Milestones for the innovation
There are many major milestones in the development of iPhone that has improved this
product and allowed users to open up new capabilities. One of the biggest milestones was
launch of the App Store in July 2008 which opened up new possibilities for iPhone users
(Silver, 2018). Software developers were able to develop applications for iPhone which allow
the users to interact with others, play games, watching movies and other activities directly
from their devices. Another major milestone was launch of virtual assistant called ‘Siri’ in
iPhone in October 2011; this assistant allowed iPhone users to search the web and perform
other functions in the smartphones by giving voice commands (Spencer, 2017).
In September 2012, Apple launched iOS 6 for iPhone which is its operating system
along with whom Apple maps was improved substantially. The company included major
improvements in its map services in order to compete with its rival Google Maps. With this
launch, many drastic changes were included in map such as 3D view, satellite images, better
real-time tracking and others (Korkeamäki & Takalo, 2013). These are some of the major
milestones of Apple iPhones that assisted it in becoming one of the most successful product
offered by the company.
Impact of innovation on organisations
The uses of Apple iPhone has changed the way in which members in organisations
interact with one another which has resulted in bring drastic changes in multiple industries.
The popularity of iPhone has positively impacted organisations and their processes by
opening new possibilities for them to perform their operations (Ismail, 2012). Many
businesses have proliferated with the popularity of iPhone since it allows them to market their
products and reach a diverse customer base directly through their smartphones.

iPhones are also used by employees in organisations to work collaboratively on group
projects and it also enables companies in building high performing virtual teams that are
continuously connected with one another through iPhones (deAgonia, 2017). AT&T is a good
example which encourages its employees to use iPhone due to its security capabilities which
protects users’ data. The company considers iPhones as corporate friendly and it is
considered as one of the most effective communication tool that allows members to share
relevant data with one other without any disruption or issue (Cluley, 2019). It also allows the
organisations to manage its operations in different countries while connected its employees
and executives with one another.
Apple iPhone provides a high level of security to its users which make it the most
suitable option for business person who chose it as their daily driver. Many companies adopt
“BYOD or bring-your-own-device” policy in which iPhone is a preferred choice for them due
to their high capabilities and security features (Brown, 2017). Employees are able to scan
documents, share attachments and conduct conference calls directly using iPhone. Mercury
Development, Algoworks, and NIX are some of the leading software development companies
which also use iPhones and other Apple products in the workplace since they develop
applications for iPhone users.
Three future developments
Although the iPhone has been highly successful; however, there are still many areas
in which Apple has option to improve iPhone (Dormehl, 2017). One of the key future
developments for iPhone can be its use in “augmented reality or AR”. Apple is continuously
pushing AR in its other devices such as iPad pro and these features are also available for
iPhone users. People can play games using AR and they can also perform other tasks such as
finding the most suitable furniture for their home by placing it in their house before
purchasing the same (Kelley, 2019). It also allows them to measure things directly from their
smartphones. It also helps in educating students by opening up new learning capabilities.
Medical students are able to see real time information about human parts through AR
technology available in their iPhones.
Another key future development is the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Apple
iPhones. Although iPhones already use AI to offer services such as Siri to its users; however,
the potential of this technology is limitless. Apple will be able to integrate AI in order to offer

advance version of personal assistant to iPhone users which will allow them to seamlessly
give command and interact with their device directly through their voice. AI will be able to
give smart recommendations to iPhone users bases on their preferences by learning about
them. Another future development is integration of long-lasting batteries in iPhone that does
not requires daily charging and it allows users to rapidly charge their devices (Bell, 2017).
Apple iPhone can use solid-state batteries which are more reliable than lithium-ion batteries
since they do not burst into flames when charging at a high power outlet. These batteries will
allow iPhone users to use their devices for more than one day and they will be able to charge
it rapidly through fast charging.
Conclusion
Based on above observations, it can be concluded that Apple iPhone is a product
innovation which has disrupted the smartphone market due to its capabilities. Due to the
design innovation of Apple iPhone it is separated from other devices which gives competitive
edge to the company. Major milestones in the development of Apple iPhone includes launch
of Siri, App Store, Apple Maps and others. Organisations used iPhone in their daily
operations as it is an effective internal communication tool which allows companies to
collaborate between virtual teams and share real time data. Three potential future
developments of iPhone include development of AR, integration of AI and implementation of
long-lasting batteries. These innovations will allow Apple to sustain the sales growth of
iPhones in the future and it will enable the company to maintain its competitive advantage in
the market.
