Grit is a multidimensional concept that involves so many learner-centered characters like
perseverance, struggle, and self-determination. Grit can be explained to mean the capacity to
hold on to one’s dreams over time, the stamina to carry on with repetitive and demanding tasks
over the years to gain eventual success.
Review the five ways to increase grit that Mr. Barker writes about, and for each one,
describe in detail how you can apply this principle personally in your life, particularly as a
successful university student. Be specific: describe the thoughts and actions you will employ
for each of the five. What actions would observers see you doing? What will they hear you
saying?
Pursue what interests you – As a student, I would go for the course that I feel that I am
good at. If you find myself in a business course and I am always thinking about technology, then
I should go out and find a course that suites me in IT (Duckworth, 2013).
Practice – As a successful student people should see me practicing especially on my
weak areas. I would spend more efforts consulting with teachers and classmates on areas that I
find difficulties in understanding.
Find a purpose – As a successful student, I would make sure that whatever I do, does
not only interest me but also helps other people. For instance, when I learn and understand a hard
concept in class, I would teach a struggling classmate.
Have hope – I must at all times believe things will be well mainly because I am working
to improve them. As a hopeful student, I would not quit on anything because it proved to be hard
the first time (Barker, 2016).
