Chapter 1: Introduction
1.1 Background of the study
Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) have been new technology in the market.
Technologies have been enhancing in daily basis in the market. Therefore, VR and AR have
been n two of the modern technology used in various fields including education and healthcare
industry. According to report of media in 2016, VR and AR have been popularized with the help
of docile media including Facebook, YouTube and Vimeo (Sanna, & Manuri, 2016). There are
various videos uploaded over these social media platforms related to VR and AR.
This research has helped in focusing in the impact if the AR and VRT in the medical field.
The use of the technology in the medical field have been discussed in the research. Various
elements of the VR and AR have been described in the research related to medical field.
1.2 Rationale
As commented by Hamza-Lup, Rolland & Hughes (2018), real environment and virtual
environment have been two aspects of the technology. These technologies have been used in
various fields including education, military and medical fields. The use of the VR and AR have
been helping in maximizing the efficiency in the medical field. Mixed reality has been a
combination of both AR and VR in the real and virtual environment. The use of the AR and VR
in the medical field have been helping in surgery, medical consultation, medical diagnosis,
medical education and training (López, Navarro & Crispin, 2018). Therefore, there have been
huge applications of AR and VR ion the healthcare industry.

The impact of AR and VR on healthcare industry will be analyzed critically. The future of the

The aim of the research is to identify the impact of AR and VR in the medical industry.
Following are the objectives of the research:

Augmented Reality has been creating its roots in the computer technology field. There
have been many uses of the AR in various fields including films and science fiction movies and
documentaries (López, Navarro & Crispin, 2018). The use of the VR and AR in the healthcare

industry have helped in maintaining a smart approach in the medical field. Virtual reality (VR)
refers to the interaction of human through VR devices and however, all generated images are
fake and virtual. In case of augmented reality (AR), virtual objects have been generated by a real
time computer environment. Therefore, AR helps in providing a semi-true and false image that is
combination of real and virtual image. As commenced by Aukstakalnis (2016), AR is the
combination of virtual and real environment and can be interacted with real time world. Medical
augmented reality has been receiving motivation from different types of visualization of medical
data and patient within same physical space. The use of the AR in the medical industry has been
helping in checking out the patient body and provided both virtual and real images of the body.
This help in creating optical visualization of the object. Therefore, healthcare professionals get a
clear picture of the problems and can reach upto to the point of impact (Herron, 2016). The use
of the AR and VR has been helping bin making easier for surgery pf critical parts of the body
including heart, brain and eye. According to the industry ARC research report, there have been
increase in the healthcare market of VR and AR up to 2.54 billion US dollars by 2020 (López,
Navarro & Crispin, 2018). Therefore, these technologies have been rapidly used in the healthcare
industry. The virtual image of the organs have been made by the AR and VR technology that
helps in operating those critical body parts (Sanna, & Manuri, 2016). This technology has been
used in the medical training and learning. Therefore, there is no need of any subsidiary body for
practicing operation for the trainees. They can see virtual image of the body and operate on that
virtual image.
Chapter 3: Research Methodology
This research will use qualitative method of research. Deductive approach will be used in
the research for focusing in the objectives of the research. Selected research design will be

descriptive research design. Descriptive research helps in providing proper analysis of the
variables in the research topic. Data collection has been an important part of the research.
Therefore, in this case data will be collected from secondary sources. Authentic journals, books,
articles and government data bases will be used for data collection related to the impact of AR
and VR on medical field (Sanna, & Manuri, 2016). Data will be analysed using qualitative data
analysis method. Three themes will, be created using the research objectives. The sample size
will be 15 journals related to research topic. All data will be ethically kept safe under Data
Protection Act 1998.
Chapter 4: Expected outcomes
The outcomes and results of the research will help in answering all research questions.
The future of the AR and VR will be properly defined in from the research. The research will
provide results about the impact of the AR and VR in the healthcare. It is expected that the
results will help in future implications of AR and VR in the medical field.
