1SOCIOLOGY: ARTICLE SUMMARY
Article Summary: “Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the
world?”
The article “Social Media: Does social media have a positive impact on the world?”
organized by Pew Internet & American Life Project and Facebook Inc. and published by
Infobase Learning in 2016 argues over the advantages and disadvantages, the positive and the
negative impacts of social media. The article is built on two opinion groups. The argument of
the article is that social media have had large positive impacts for it to be dismissed as a mere
bad effect on society. Many of the social personas have argued that internet and social media
have facilitated the democratic movements in Arab and Syria while the opponents argue on
the view that revolution have never been dependent upon social media and it is the cause that
brings people together rather than the communication channel.
The author presents many other supporting and refuting points of view which
indicates that the world has been divided in this aspect. The author provides several survey
and opinion statistics along with responses and excerpts from expert opinions. For example,
the author supports the opposition point of view by the result of a Pew research which
suggests that using social media increases stress and self-centeredness. In support of the
argument he provides the opinion of Taso Lagos of University of Washington where he
predicts the social media sites becoming the community centers in future. While both the
arguments are equally string and are based on specific and credible sources supporting each
claim, social media has become an integral and indisputable part of modern life.
