Advantages and Disadvantages of Facial Recognition Technology
Facial recognition technology has no doubt been one of the greatest inventions of Woodrow
Bledsoe due to its vast benefits in several sectors. This technology that has been incorporated with
artificial intelligence has however been subject to criticism leading to its abolishment in areas like San
Francisco while other countries such as China continue to explore its use in their daily lives. Let us look
at some of the advantages and disadvantage of this technology.
Facial recognition technology has been integrated into government agencies and law
enforcement agencies, they have thus been effective in arresting criminals by searching for their faces
within the country. It has also helped in apprehending criminals who manage to escape prisons planning
to engage in dangerous activities.
Facial recognition technology has enforced security by enforcing double authentication. It has
enabled law enforcement agencies to find missing persons by using surveillance systems to track their
latest movements. In the medical sector biometric scanning is an invention from facial recognition
technology.
While these benefits seem promising for a brighter future some of the challenges of these
technology are: lack of accuracy for non-white individuals where the facial recognition has produced a
35% error rate for non-white. There has been abuse of the information collected by advertising
agencies, government agencies and other commercial firms that analyses the big data received in
coming up with policies and certain prejudices. Facial recognition has also stored faces of reformed
individuals among former criminals making them suspected criminals despite their innocence.
Facial recognition has had to major negative impacts which are invasion of privacy, restricted
democratic freedom and discrimination. These technology has interfered with individual’s autonomy of
making decision thus violating privacy, it has discriminated specific racial individuals due to its

inaccuracy and finally it has restricted the democratic freedom of citizens in fear of being monitored by
the government.
