Introduction to IT at the company:
Since the establishment of the company in 1971, Rolls Royce Programmable Logic
Controller has been in the aerospace industry along with Defense Company and the power
systems. Apart from this the company is also involved in Motor cars since 1998 and is a
subsidiary for the BMW Group. The company at present makes use of the Information
technologies like the Artificial Intelligence for the purpose of development of the aerospace
techniques. Artificial Intelligence is one of the most talked about technology in the industry. The
companies like Rolls Royce make of these technologies for the extension of its digital ecosystem
(White 2019).
The selected interview has been conducted by the CIO with the Paul Stein, the chief
technology officer of the Rolls Royce, who reports the CEO for each and every strategies that
has been undertaken by the company in order to make developments and enhance the company’s
performances. To strengthen its global network further, the company has developed the
Authorized service centers around the world for the purpose of the CorporateCare. Rolls Royce
has cutting edge technologies which provides them with the safest and the cleanest services.
They have high performance services for computing and fastest technical engineering Personal
Computers set up for the purpose of the developing IT capabilities. The vision generated by the
IT is allowing the company to move towards the complete digitization of the company for
designing and testing of the air-craft engines. The cost and time required for the development of
the engines have reduced considerably (Lawrence and Braddon 2017).
Internet of things is one of the other most preferred technology by the company and is
considered to have played a significant role in the development of the Rolls Royce Company in
development of the company. The creation of the digital twins helps in monitoring the health of

the engines, which has already being done for the past few years. Autonomous shipping and the
Ship intelligence have helped in the reducing the number of crews required for the marine
services of the Rolls Royce Company. The company’s operational unit is planning on opening
new manufacturing zones around the world such that the progress in the business can be
achieved in a short notice (Ryemill and Min 2016). There were existing technologies in the
company from the very beginning and now there are more technologies which are about to come.
The employees are expected to get acquainted with them but the process is not that easy.

Theme 1: Electrical Aviation:
According the Chief Technical Officer of the company, about £ 1.4 billion is invested
over the R& D every year. Rolls Royce is one of the tech-hungry company of all time. Artificial
Intelligence is one such technology used by the company along with Internet of Things in order
to develop business. The company has developed a new start-up known as the electrical aviation
sector which is known as the Rolls Royce Electrical. All though this has been developed, the
CTO do not consider this to be the future of the aviation. He thinks that the machines could be
developed in a manner such that the environment will not be harmed. Usage of the battery packs
can be beneficial as electric have a considerable impact on the helicopters and the smaller air
crafts. With the usage of the proper batteries, the system is expected to be cheaper.
Theme 2: Industry 4.0
Rolls Royce is company that makes use of the Big Data, Cloud Computing, Machine
learning, Internet of things and Artificial intelligence along with the Industry 4.0. The elements
together consists of an interconnected platform which helps the Internet Technology

things on the data helps in managing hundreds and thousands of data at a time in the business.

manage it. Industry 4.0 is the fourth generation of industrialization. The company has made use
of the internet of things, machine learning technologies and artificial intelligence before.
However it has begun the usage of the Industry 4.0. This include several concepts like the 3D
printing technologies, which can be extremely important once in use. As per the CTO of the
company, the 4.0 technology is basically the digital transformation of the company’s
manufacturing or the production and other process which are related to the value creation of the
processes. This is a way where the exchange of the data in manufacturing technologies takes
place along with the automation technology. The concept of the smart factory technology has
been obtained from the Industry 4.0 (Gilchrist 2016).
According to the interview, as much as the 20% of the entire factory works on this
technology which includes the digitized manufacturing and the supply chain management
system. All though the company has started making use of the industry 4.0 in the organization, it
is still way too far from full implementation of the technology.

The data scientists within the company determined that for the performance optimization

the customers by increasing the convenience and the excellence of the company. The analysis of
the customer data with the usage of the artificial intelligence technology gives incredible results
which can be used to improve the customer experiences in the system.
The development of the solution based on the Uptake is mainly based on the machine
learning and data science technologies which helps in providing the digital conversion of the
business. The performance of the assets present within the company can be measured with the
help of an application which is known as the Asset Performance Management application. For
unlocking the power of the global industrial sector the Uptake makes use of a combination
consisting of the machine learning and the data analytic. The R2 data labs of the Rolls Royce
Company helps in the development of the data application which is capable of unlocking the
designs and have the efficiencies for manufacturing and operations within the company and
helps in the creation of the new services and propositions of the customers (Yin et al. 2017).

Missing Issues:
The interview that has been conducted by CIO with the CTO of the Rolls Royce has
being very informative. However there are certain issues that has bot being mentioned in the
interview that plays an important role for the company. There are certain issues which Stein does
not mention in his interview with CIO and is listed below. The company makes use of more
technologies and applications in order to make certain decision and analyse the large amount of

data with lesser mistakes. Technologies are used for improving the designs and creation of better
designs. Few of the technologies which assists in the development are given in the section below.
ERP: Enterprise resource planning or the ERP system is used by the Rolls Royce Company
for the development of the resources. It is however a business process manufacturing software.
The company is well known for using multiple technologies like the cloud computing, AI and AI
based application and many more (Nwankpa 2019). This was firstly taken cared by the human.
The human are often prone to the mistakes hence the company decided upon planning ERP
system. This helps in complete monitoring of the system where all the applications and the
technologies are centralized and monitored with the help of the ERP. The mistakes are lesser and
the time taken for processing the data is much lesser as well. But in his interview with CIO, Stein
forgets about mentioning the ERP system at all (Harwood 2017).
CAD: The Company makes use of the computer aided designs for the purpose of
creating, modifying, analyzing and optimizing designs (Gilligan 2018). The productivity of the
designers in the company has increased considerably with the usage of the CAD software in the
Company and the so is the quality of designs. Rolls Royce makes use of the EDA or the
Electronic Design Automation which is also known as the MDA or Computer Aided Drafting or
CAD. In his interview he forgets to make mention of that as well (Bingulac 2018).
Financial Difficulties: The Chief Technology Officer Paul Stein in his interview with CIO
mentions that the company makes investments in various sectors for the development of the
Information technologies in the organization. But not for once does he mentions that the
company was going through financial difficulties at certain stages of the technological
development.

Future direction:
The company is aiming for the certain things that has to be implemented in the future for
the betterment of the aerospace services. This includes, sustainable forms of aviation techniques.
We have already heard of the sustainable development which means that the lesser amount of the
nature will be harm due to the development of the technologies. It is already known that a huge
amount of the carbon di oxide is generated when a plane is in the air. Thus the company has
developed an idea o-f using sustainable aviation fuel which will reduce the emission of the
greenhouse gas considerably.
The Industry 4.0 is a technology which has been introduced to into the company and only
20 % of the company is aware of the technology (Wagner, Herrmann and Thiede 2017). With the
further development of the fourth generation of the industrialization, numerous new things can
be obtained which in turn is expected to the do greater good to the company and make the
functioning of the company more effective and efficient. This technology makes use of several
other technologies such as the 3D printing technologies and other technologies such as the
artificial intelligence and cloud computing technologies in order to bring about changes in the
organization (Ben-Daya, Hassini and Bahroun 2019). The implementation of these techniques in
to the company will help in improvising the ideas developed by the company.

one of the tech hungry business giant and has been establishing itself in numerous fields and
