3PROPOSAL OUTLINE
Introduction:
Out of all the different public health priorities, the prevalence of sexually transmitted
diseases or STDs is increasing at an alarming rate for the age group of 13 to 18. According to a
report, it has been discovered that almost 50% of the entire percentage of newly acquired STDs
are for the age group of young adults and hence it has become a glaring public health priority
(Martinez, Copen & Abma, 2011).
Problem statement and significance:
According to the recent statistics, nearly 505 of high school kids of United States of America
have been reported to be engaged in sexual activities. A major contributing factor behind the
rising rate of prevalence of STDs is the lack of health literacy and sex education in this particular
age group (Martinez, Copen & Abma, 2011).
Aims and objectives:
The primary aims and objectives of this project are:
To discover the level of education and health literacy in the target population of
Washington DC.
To gauge the level of understanding in the target population about safe sex and
preventative and promotional behaviour
To discover the contributing factor behind the lack of understanding in the target
population.

4PROPOSAL OUTLINE
Nursing theorist:
Famous nursing theorist Virginia Henderson in her needs theory had explained that the
responsibility of a nursing professional is to assess the needs of the patients and provide
empowerment or independence to the patients by the means of sharing knowledge, expertise and
support, in order to enhance the pace of their recovery, which can be related to the primary aim
of this project (Ahtisham & Jacoline, 2015).
Description of methods:
In order to achieve the goals set for the project survey questionnaires will be used to assess
the health literacy and education levels of the target population. The survey questionnaire will be
handed out to both educated and uneducated groups of Washington DC.
