INTRODUCTION
Overview
Supported housing is a combination of services and housing which are extended in the
most effective manner. The main objective of these types of houses is to provide and help people
to lead a stable and productive life. People who require supported housing are those who face
complex challenges from families, low income, homelessness, etc. Another persistent issue that
aggravated the requirement of supported housing include addiction, mental health disorder,
alcoholism, diverse disabilities or any other challenges that barricade them in leading a
successful life (Tsai, Mares and Rosenheck, 2012).
The aim of supported housing is to promote welfare among the people who do not have
adequate finance to arrange housing for themselves. Government also get involved in taking
various steps so that the cause can be supported. Rendering services to the people who disabled
and are not able to perform various functions on their own are given technologically equipped
houses so that they can execute most of the functions of daily life independently. The present
research will help in exploring this area in a well-defined manner and assess the role of
supported housing in delivering welfare to the tenants (What is supported housing?, 2017).

 To assess the criteria based on which they are chosen for supported housing
 To ascertain the type of support offered to tenants in moving to other accommodation
Rationale of the research
It is important that any research that is conducted by the researcher holds some relevance
and is able to fulfil some objectives as well. Present research will be conducted with an aim of
assessing role of supported housing in delivering welfare to the tenants. It will help the research
to collect in depth knowledge with respect to supported housing. Further, it will also help in
understanding the steps that have been taken by government of UK in understanding and helping

the tenants to shift from one accommodation to another with an aim to promote better and stable
living.
LITERATURE REVIEW
According to Hopper (2012), supported housing ensures that the people who require
support can lead a healthy life. A vital role is played in extending safe and secured environment
to people so that they can lead their life independently. Hence, an important role is played by
these kinds of houses in promoting welfare in the environment. However, in contrast to this, as
per the views of O'connell, Kasprow and Rosenheck (2013), apart from welfare, there are various
services that are provided in a supported housing set up. These services include proving support
to older people so that they can independently perform their tasks, extending help to domestic
violence victims and bring stability to their lives, etc. Supported housing also makes sure that
adequate amount of help in extended to people with learning disabilities and assisting them in
making their independence up to maximum level.
According to Tejani and et.al. (2014), government of UK take adequate steps so that
adequate amount of funding is extended to the supported housing. As per the funding model for
supported housing, developed by the government of UK, there are two common areas to fulfil
short term requirements of funds. The first one is to get top up funding from local authorities of
the country and other one is support from supported housing placements. It ensures that the
supported houses that are registered with the government have adequate amount of funds with
them so that they can perform their functions effectively and attain the desired objectives.
However, in contrast to this, as per the views of Marcheschi and et.al. (2013), a supported care is
chosen based upon certain criteria. One of the main concern is to assess the intensity of the
requirement possessed by an individual in order to get admitted in the supported housing.
Further, people with diverse disabilities are also given with preference over other type of people
demanding for entering into supported care home.
According to Kuehn (2012), some of the common support activities extended in care
home are person centred and emotional support is given to the individuals which is flexible as
per the intensity of condition prevailing in them. It helps them in building their confidence and
independence level as well. Further, experienced staff is employed in housing set up so that
excellent services can be provided to the admissions. The administration at supported housing is

ensured that by taking control of their lives and further make sure that they live independently
and fulfil all their aspirations. However, in contrast to this, as per the views of Gabrielian and
et.al. (2015), the scheme of supported housing has been designed to help vulnerable people live
as much independent as possible. They not only maintain their tenancy but also help in tackling
with other societal issues such as poverty, mental health, risk of abuse and homelessness. People
are given with support as per their necessity such as job training, drug and alcohol abuse
program, community support services, job training, etc. Hence, supported housing set up is
essential to mitigate homelessness and expensive problems which demand attention.
RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
Research design
Research design is an important concept which is required to be considered by the
researcher while preparing for the research. It is important to gather adequate amount of
knowledge in order to develop base for the study. Hence, exploratory research will be conducted
to achieve the stated aim and objectives (Silverman, 2016).
Research philosophy
Various types of research philosophies are there, such as, interpretivism, positivism, etc.
The main aim of positive research is to effectively collect and interpret data. It makes analysis
process efficient enough so that the researcher can easily reach to desired conclusion. Hence,
positivism approach will be used to conduct the present research.
Research Method
Two types of research methods are present, that is, qualitative and quantitative type of
research. Quantitative research method is helpful in defining the data in quantifiable terms.
However, qualitative type of research method will be more helpful in conducting the research. It
will assist in collecting in depth knowledge regarding supported housing. Hence, qualitative
research method will be used in the current study (Flick, 2015).
Data collection and analysis
Data collection is another important aspect. Hence, primary and secondary both methods
will be used to initiate data collection for the present study. Primary data will be collected
through questionnaire. However, secondary data will be collected through books, journals, online

sources, blogs, newspapers, etc. The collected data will be analysed using qualitative method,
where thematic techniques will be used to attain effective results.
Participants of the research
Primary research will be conducted for the present research where data will be collected
from tenants who have been able to get supported housing from the government. The
questionnaire will be designed in such a manner that it can fulfil the stated objectives of present
study (Panneerselvam, 2014). Further, the sample is considered as subset of the whole
population, whose results can be utilised in generalizing results of the study. Hence, for the
present study, a sample of 30 people will be used who are already living in supported housing of
the government.
RESEARCH LIMITATIONS
While conducting the present study, there are various research limitations that can be
faced by the researcher. Some of the limitations are mentioned as below: Lack of availability of reliable data: The data collected from various sources may not be
reliable enough. The respondents may not open up and disclose their actual results. It can
deviate ultimate results of the study as well. Time constraint: Conducting research is a time taking process. However, due to specific
time allotted for the study, various functions may not be conducted in a manner it must
have been. For instance, inadequate time allotted to findings and discussion section. It
can affect the overall results of the results. Moreover, it can also decrease its authenticity
as well (Smith, 2015). Budget constraint: Adequate amount of investment is required to conduct the research.
Availability of inadequate finance can affect the deliverables of study. It may act as a
barrier in conducting the study.
 Restricted Access: There are various websites which are restricted for people to access to.
It can limit the secondary knowledge of researcher. Further, the researcher could miss
important information that could have made the whole study and its results effective
enough (Gale and et.al., 2013).
