AI Summary
This report delves into the management of chronic illnesses, specifically focusing on asthma and the education of nurses to improve patient care. It identifies system factors influencing the teaching and learning process in Canada, including biological, behavioral, and governmental aspects. The report details teaching materials such as demonstrations, games, posters, pamphlets, and videos designed to educate nurses on asthma triggers, prevention, and emergency treatment. The teaching plan outlines objectives like identifying triggers, understanding risk factors, and implementing effective prevention and treatment strategies. It also emphasizes the importance of nurses in helping patients manage their medications, follow care plans, and recognize asthma attacks early. Ultimately, the report stresses that effective nursing strategies, achieved through comprehensive teaching, are crucial for managing asthma and improving patient outcomes. 3CHRONIC ILLNESS MANAGEMENT
Introduction
Chronic illness can be described as a long-term illness and this means that a person has to
adjust to the demands of the illness and at the same time requires a therapy for its treatment.
There might additional stresses and this might change the way a person sees himself or herself,
live and relates to others (Betterhealth.vic.gov.au, 2018). This study is based on a chronic illness
like asthma and it will be it asthma-related management information will be disseminated within
the nurses.
System factors that influence the teaching and the learning process in chronic illness in
Canada
The several system factors that influence the teaching and the learning process are related
to the biological and the health behaviours of the patients, the treatment procedures used by the
medical professionals, the governmental policies regarding the management of the disease
(Patientsafetyinstitute.ca, 2018).
Teaching materials for the education session
The teaching materials for presenting the education session to the nurses include the live
demonstration, games, skit, posters, pamphlet and a short video.
The educational intervention for the patients and their families that are suffering from
asthma yields the best results. Educational interventions provide the best self-management
strategies in the asthma management. Educational interventions help in the reduction of the
hospitalizations due to the asthma attack (Cabana et al., 2014).

Teaching plan
The target audience for the chosen for the teaching plan are the nurses. Nurses are chosen
for the teaching session because they are the first line of healthcare service deliverers. The topic
of discussion chosen for teaching the nurses is asthma. Asthma is chosen because it is a medical
condition in which the airways become narrow and starts swelling and at the same time produces
extra mucus. This creates a difficulty in breathing and triggers shortness of breath, wheezing and
coughing (Lambrecht & Hammad, 2012).
The major objectives of the teaching plan are as follows:
The nurses will be able to identify the various substances and irritants that trigger
symptoms and signs of asthma.
The nurses will be able to identify the factors that will increase the chances of
developing asthma.
The nurses will be able to prevent asthma in a much more effective way by
working together with the doctor and patient in a better way.
The nurses will be able to help the patients take their medicines in a better way,
follow an asthma care plan, monitor the asthma triggers, identify the attacks early,
get the vaccinations for pneumonia and influenza.
The nurses will be able to treat the patients that require emergency treatment.
I will plan to use my resource in an effective way so that the educational materials are
provided to the nurses properly and sufficiently. The various resources to be used are
demonstration, posters, pamphlet, video, game and skit. In order to visually educate the nurses
reading asthma, the videos and the posters will be used. Demonstration and skits will be used to
educate the nurses in order give a demonstration on how to control an asthma attack, the

emergency procedures that are needed to be followed. The pamphlets can be a good source of the
handouts that will be serving as a quick guide to all the teaching lessons in the session.
Teaching strategy- video analysis is the best teaching strategy considering the nurse’s
knowledge and enhancing them with the video lessons. The evaluation method will be based on
an oral test which will be conducted after the completion of the teaching lesson.

Conclusion
From the above discussion, it can be concluded that the chronic illness like asthma is
detrimental for an individual if not treated and managed properly. The main issue is that there are
several causal factors that make the disease hard to control. Thus, effective nursing strategies are
required which can be done only through the effective teaching strategies.
