Introduction
The case study here is a Collins bank’s ATM machine. In this report, we will discuss the inception phase
of the SDLC. This phase includes the initiation of the project. It includes gathering of all the requirements
of the project, modelling of the system, setting environment and estimating the time required. This
phase includes the case study’s analysis, describing concepts, system vision document, requirements
and feasibility analysis (Ambler, 2012).
System Vision Document
Problem Description
The Collins ATM bank requires an ATM machine to facilitate the purpose of the banking. The machine
should have a card insertion slot, a display to display the options to the customers, a keypad so that
customers can interact with the machine, cash dispenser, the printer to print the transactional details
and a chute to allow the customers to deposit cash and cheques.
The user when inserts the card, the machine performs a reading operation to identify the card. If the
card is not identified within five seconds, the session gets destroyed. The user has to insert the card
again. After the identification of the card, the user gets options of what operation he has to perform.
The increase in the number of customers, the use of the machine is increasing. There are certain
problems that are to be reciprocated. The ATM machine needs a continuous storage of the cash. There
are times when the ATM runs out of cash which causes inconvenience to the customers.
The ATM machine does not have the feature of selecting the denominations in which they want the
cash. It is recommendable that the ATM machine should be more users interactive when the user can
select the amount of money to be withdrawn in the terms of the numbers and the denominations he
wants instead of just entering the amount. Also, there could be a voice recognition system that would
guide the machine through the page navigation.
Thus, some of the above problems should be identified in the current system and efforts should be
made in order to eliminate the problems (Priddy, 2017).

System Capabilities
After the identification of the problems in the current design of the ATM system, the focus should be
given as to how the business efficiency of the system would be increased. The major system capabilities
of the new system after the modifications are as follows:
1. The machine should be able to read the card more efficiently. In case, the card is not properly
read, for the security purposes, the session should be timed out. The machine should not lag in
its functionalities.
2. The capability of the machine should be upgraded to enable voice recognition to go through the
page navigation. It would allow user efforts to reduce and enable high accessibility of the
customers.
3. The system should also be capable of getting input through selection rather than giving the
option to manually type the amount.
4. The system should encourage reliability among the customers by keeping the storage of the
cash adequate at every interval of time to reduce the inconvenience faced by the users.
5. The machine should make the feature of selecting denominations available to the customers.
This system capability would enhance its business effectiveness.
6. Also, in place of receipt which requires a printer, the details of the last transaction could be
displayed on the screen itself. This system capability would enhance the cost effectiveness of
the system (Khalifa & Saadan, 2013).
Business Effectiveness
The efforts of the system would always be to maximize the business effectiveness of the system. The
system capabilities that are to be implemented could provide the following benefits:
1. The choosing of the denominations would enable development of more user base.
2. The development of user base would increase the popularity of the system and the bank.
3. The capital of the bank will be increased as the ATMs have become a source of revenue (Charles,
2016).
4. The most users interactive ATMs facilitate the foot traffic a lot more.
5. The card fees are reduced. The transactions in cash would be more inevitable if the users find
the ATMs more modified and more capable according to their requirements.

6. The new capabilities would surge the reputation or the bank and therefore provide a hold strong
in the competition with other banks.
Analysis of the functionalities
The functionalities in the system should be according to the user requirements. The ATM system of the
Collins bank should be able to fulfill the following specifications:
1. The users should be able to withdraw required amount from their accounts.
2. The users should be able to choose the denominations in which they want their amount.
3. The ATM system should be easily accessible so that the users do not face any inconvenience.
4. There should be a regular stock of cash inside the machine so that the users do not have to
return empty handed.
5. The machine should also enable the users to deposit cash into their accounts.
6. The machine should be able to give the users option of savings or current account from which
they would withdraw.
7. The machine should also show them the details of their last transaction.
8. The machine may opt for voice recognition for page navigation.
Resources required
The resources that are required for the system are as follows:
1. Hardware: Many of the ATM systems are enclosed within the banks itself. But to increase the
accessibility, the systems should be available at more and more places. This requires proper
infrastructure. The ATM system also requires the hardware components.
2. People: The ATM systems which are located outside the banks, the system requires workforce.
Engineers are required to engineer the algorithms which enable the functionalities of the
system. A team is required for the proper maintenance of the system. In case of any fault or bug
in the system, a team is required to sort it all up so that there is no future inconvenience.
3. Financial: For setting up of the system, the banks require capital too. The finance should be well
off.
4. Software: AI is required for the proper functioning of the system. Different kinds of software
are also required.

Broad Feasibility of the Project
The feasibility of the whole project could be divided into three broader categories:
Technical Feasibility:
It includes following things:
Implementation: The stage of implementation is a quite risky one. The risks that are involved at
this stage are in the coding and the fabrication of the hardware components of the ATM
machine. The feasibility study should be carried out very efficiently during this phase.
Integration: This stage involves fewer amounts of risks as compared to the other two stages.
System Engineering: The engineering designs of the system should be feasible. For example, the
ATM system should be engineered so as to reduce the time complexity.
Unit level designs: The designs at the component or unit level should be efficiently designed.
Any risks at this level could lead to major setback.

Unit Testing: The testing of individual components such as card reader, printer, display, and
algorithm etcetera should be done so as to avoid the complications.
Economic Feasibility:
The setting up of ATMs inside the bank is more economically feasible. The setting up of ATMs in user
accessible areas may be once expensive but on a long run, provide more revenue.
Legal Feasibility:
The laws should be followed for the establishment of the ATMs. Different organizational policies should
be followed and feasibility should be addressed. The policies are given by the government where ATM is
established.
Operational Feasibility:
It includes following things:
Exploration of the concept: The whole planning of the project has to be done according to the user
requirements. The whole concept of the system needs to be explored so that the functionalities match
the requirements.
System verifications and validation: The feasibility study should include system verification and
validation so as to verify the user requirements.
Maintenance: The maintenance of the ATM machines should be feasible so that the changes could be
done easily.
Proposed Outcome
After carrying out the feasibility study, the following outcomes should be achieved:
1. When the card is inserted in the ATM machine, the card reader component should be active
enough to read and fetch information.
2. The user interface of the ATM system should be acceptable to the users.
3. The system should be able to save the time of the users.
4. The system should be able to fix all the faults and enable the maintenance of the system very
easy.
