Introduction
Events and attractions are part and parcel of tourism and hospitality industry. Current trend of
tourism and hospitality industry is evolved through the organizing of events or built-in attraction
of any place. There are different types of events take place globally. The importance of such
events enhances the prosperity of tourism and hospitality industry. The occurrence of events or
highlighting attractions enhances the scope of revenue and profitability of the industry. In this
article we will highlight the importance of events and attractions of these two industries for its
economic and commercial perspective with the long-term impacts of them on these industries
with particular emphasis on a mega event known as Olympic Games. (Education, 2018)
Importance and types of events or attractions
As per Bowdin (2006), the term event is used for describing presentation, certain rituals, specific
performances or coveted celebrations. (Eck, 2018)These events are planned with conscious
approach to mark special occurrence to accomplish specific cultural, social or corporate
objectives. As per Jago and Shaw (1998), there are six types of features an event should focus
on. They are:
1) Creating attraction for development of tourism and hospitality industry;
2) With limited feature of time duration;
3) With the characteristics of non-frequent happenings;
4) Creating the awareness, profile or image of any geographical region;
5) Offering of social experience;
6) With the nature of extraordinary in presentation. (YAROSHENKO, 2017)
There are different features to classify events. Basic demarcation of events is classified as
planned or unplanned. While planned events are organized with more specialization of studying
event management, with specific infrastructural set-up and for specific time duration; unplanned
events are classified as natural calamity, accidents and such other incidents which happen
spontaneously. We will discuss planned events for this article. As per the size and scope of
opportunities of planned events, they are classified in four major divisions with respective
examples:

1) Mega events- global sports, business and entertainment events;
2) Hallmark events- special programs with attractions of stakeholders with special features;
3) Major events- the sports, entertainment and social events with big size and large
stakeholders empowered by mass awareness ;
4) Local events- mainly confined within local community. (Oklobdžija, 2015)
Chosen event
The event chosen for this article is upcoming Olympic Games at Tokyo, 2020. This event is with
the nature of mega events. As this event happens once in four years, the event demands long time
preparation from the nation and the global community. (Vierhaus, 2018) (Han et al., 2011)
Type, dimension and associated attractions of Olympic Games
This event is of mega type, as it is a global event; in which all members of the International
Olympic Association are involved.
The dimension of this event is multi level, as this event is not only involves global sports
community, but also mass involvement of spectators come from the farthest corners of the world.
The host nation is involved in preparation with multi-level infrastructural preparation by building
new stadiums, enhancement of civic facilities for the visiting community, enhancement of the
hospitality industry to accommodate such big numbers of global spectators. (Groote, 2005)
Associated attractions of this event ensure the projection of national culture and heritage to the
global community irrespective of their physical presence or not. Being named as the Greatest
Show on the Earth, International Olympic Association is very systematic to find the proper
aspirant for hosting this sports event once in four years.
Stakeholders of the Olympic Games
There are multi-level Stakeholders involved in the mega event of Olympic Games. We can

Categorization Indicators of Olympic Games
This event is under the classification of mega sport event with its world-wide popularity.
Additionally this event will get connected to culture, education, technology, nation-wide
connectivity and communication, education, sustainability, mentioned as a few of others.
The upcoming Olympic Games will be held at Tokyo during August to September, 2020.
The size of the event will be the largest so far global events are considered.
Numbers of participants are around 15,000 to participate in 33 types of sports.
The impact of this event has different spheres. Economical impact for Japan would be
approximately 32 trillion Yen, while the economic impact of Tokyo would be approximately 22
trillion Yen. (Japan, 2017)
Conclusion
Events and attractions are the other side of tourism and hospitality industry. When both these
features occur, the enhancement of both the industries happens. All type of events have impact
on tourism depending upon the size and nature of the event. Events can boost up tourism
industry with hospitality industry at its high level of standing.
