Introduction
The purpose of the report is to mainly identify a contemporary issue in Australia. The
study identifies that immigration over the time has become a major issue which needs immediate
attention. Over the recent years, it has been making more headlines the issue brings advantages
as well as disadvantages for the Australian economy (Kennedy et al., 2015). The study will shed
light on the issue of immigration in the context of the country from both positive as well as
negative perspective.
Global scenario of immigration
In the past few years, immigration has been securing place in the front pages of
newspapers as an emerging threat to the country. At the same time few articles also made
headlines that presented immigration as the key contributor to the global economy. In this regard,
it must be mentioned that the present statistics states that the there are 191 million immigrants
across the globe (Ueffing, Rowe & Mulder, 2015). The number has been doubled in the recent
50 years.
Causes of immigration
People emigrate from one nation to other due to various reasons. While some of them are
often forced to leave their native lands and move to a foreign country, others move to a foreign
country out of will. However it has been seen largely that mainly people immigrates due to job
change. Thus they can be termed as economic immigrants as they move to the foreign country in
searching for better opportunities (Kennedy et al., 2015).

One of the major causes of immigration is the globalization. As per the report of Inter
Press Service, globalization has been marked as one of main reason, which encourages people to
leave their own country (Ueffing, Rowe & Mulder, 2015). Along with that, there are political as
well as economic reasons which contribute to the increasing number of immigrants across the
globe.
Impacts of globalization
In the main part of the study it must be discussed that immigration has both positive and
negative impacts on the economy of Australia (Kennedy et al., 2015).
 Immigrant employees have the possibilities of being more effective.
 They often work for longer hours for fewer salaries as compared with the natives.
 Immigration contributes to the cultural diversity across the globe.
 It has been seen that most of the country welcomes immigrants as talent pool from the
other countries.
However the immigration also has some negative impacts too.
 Due to immigration, criminal activities have been increased in the country.
 From human trafficking to drug trafficking and other forms of crimes has been increased
with the increased rate of immigration.
 The solicit-political issue, racism has been securing its place in the news headlines which
most of the immigrants suffer from.
 While there are cases, where the country itself welcomes immigrants, there are the cases
of illegal immigration also.

perspectives. While first article states immigration has been masking the economic decline of the
country, other sheds light on the possible impacts if the country puts an embargo on immigration.
As per the second article if Australia halts immigration, the growth of the country will drastically
fall ("Immigration and the Australian economic illusion", 2018). At the same time the article,
"High immigration masks Australian economic decline", (2018) stated that immigration pushes
the Australian government to create job opportunities.
