AUSTRALIAN ENGINEERING PRACTICE
What?
According to Luthander et al. (2015), self-reviewing is one of the biggest attributes
that an individual can undertake. The critical manner in which reviewing of self-performance
is made highlights the character of an individual. It provides an opportunity to manage
oneself so that effective and lifelong learning can take place. Without learning, it can be
difficult for an individual to continue with the professional development mainly because of
lack of knowledge. Therefore, it is necessary that maintaining self-critique can provide
individuals with an ability to develop one's talent and personality so that they can be effective
for the success of personal as well as professional life. However, there are certain negative
influences as well that can be caused due to the implementation of such techniques.
So what?
As stated by Vohs and Baumeister (2016) the manner in which self-review is done by
an individual can affect the personality trait. The review can be based on the performances at
professional as well as personal life. Therefore, the positivity of this is that the individuals
can manage the manner in which they can continue with the development of the personalities.
The management of an individual can be attributed to its behaviour and the conduct during its
professional and personal development. Therefore, it can be said that learning provides an
opportunity to continuously improve the knowledge and skill so that a proper career can be
formed that can help in the growth of the individual.
At the same time, certain negative consequences can also be obtained from self-
reviewing of performance or personality. For example, Willis (2017) is of the opinion that
self-review may tempt individuals to provide only the positive side. Although in the end, it
can be ineffective for the development of an individual, it may provide a limited opportunity

for the employees to maintain its discipline in the market. Therefore, it can be said that the
negative consequence of the self-review is the fact that the self-management of the
individuals cannot be maintained. The ability to learn may decline as the individuals may not
gain the knowledge required for professional development. Hence, alternate solutions can be
derived to mitigate the negativity of the techniques.
What else?
The mitigation of the negative consequence can be done by keeping in mind the
values and gains that may be obtained for the individuals. He et al. (2016) stated that the
negative consequence of the techniques provides an opening for gaining a positive result. For
example, if individuals provide positive self-review then the manner negative consequence of
the development of the individuals may cause problems in the professional lives. The
personality of the individuals defines the manner in which the self-management may take
place. Hence, it can be stated that effective learning technique needs to be adopted so that the
behaviour and mentality of the people can develop. In this regard, the cognitive learning of
the strategy can be adopted.
What now?
In the present scenario, the self-review, as well as the self-management technique,
need to be adopted so that individuals can understand the advantages and disadvantages of
the personality types. This can be done by creating a role model so that the flaws in technique
in terms of personality or ideas can be identified. It is essential that learning techniques are
developed that are effective for the development of a proper profession. The adoption of
cognitive or behavioural learning technique can help in the development of the individuals
and ensure that a professional career can be obtained. Therefore, self-review, self-

management as well as learning is important in the development of personality in the modern
