LO1 Elaborate historical impact of engineering on society.
1A)
Engineers impact on society is very vase, many engineers have done much great works for
society, so that the society doesn’t have to face any problem in any department there are many
examples for it like Invention of telephone is one of the most famous examples for society,
through telephone people from any place can talk to other person whoever they want to. Many
other projects are also done very good job in society. Engineer’s creative thinking in every
project always makes a good society helps the people who are living in society. Engineers make
good live project so that no one has to face any problems regarding any fields, there are different
examples available for a society like a computer, smart phones, and other different machines.
Engineers always put creative thoughts into every project which makes them beneficial for
society.
1) Guillaume Daniel Delprat: - In 20th century delprat perfected a technique which became
famous with the name of Potter- Delprat, C.V. it was a floatation process which brought
revolution because sulfide ore could finally be treated which further helped in extracting
millions of tons, metals which received desperate a total amount of 1000 Australian
Dollars for his patent. Major contribution of Delprat was that he predicted exhaustion of
resources from broken hill mine (Osborne 2019).
Delprat helped to establish iron ore establishment, which was better than German steel
plant. Delprat helped during WWI by helping in the construction of Aeroplanes and
arsenal construction. Delprat contributed to making high-quality steel which brought him
into a new light. Delprat helped hugely in the mining and metallurgical process. He
helped society by implementing flotation processes and his immense work in the iron and
steel industry.
2) Harry George Hawker: - Harry introduced Sopwith Tabloid. It is a short-winged
biplane, it became fastest and required certain skills to help soar. He helped gain
popularity to biplanes over monoplanes. He proved that biplanes could be used as
fighting planes during WWI. Hawker helped boost confidence of Australian’s in
Aeroplane. Hawker noticed that several accidents occur because of tail-spin. Several

1) In the year 2008, the government released a statement that there a program which is
going to be introduced which would help replace IT systems. The costing of the whole
project was up to 360 million dollars and the name of the project was HealthSMART.
Because of the absence of certain safety measures and mitigations which could be
effective and beneficial has caused safety risks regarding patients. Several patients suffer
great danger and almost loss their lives.
2) Custom service: - in the year October 2005 there was a cargo system which was
integrated within Australian services. It was a huge destructive failure which causes
several people to lose their lives. The whole project was a total failure and lost 250
million dollars into the project. Shipments of different goods were delayed that too during
Christmas vacation.
3) West Gate Bridge: - one of the most tragic incidents faced by the people of Australia was
the collapse of West Gate Bridge in the year 1970. The construction was going on when
the bridge collapsed. It was one of the most tragic accidents faced by industrial people.
The collision resulted in 35 construction workers being killed and approx. 18 people were
found injured. The cause of the west bridge being collapse was due to poor structural
design and because of following unusual method while constructing the bridge. After
controversy among the builders and the people of society, the bridge finally got
completed by the year 1978. Though the actions obviously left people of Australia into
shock, it could not diminish spark which the builders had.
LO2 Explain engineering professionalism and ethics in the Australian context.

Every engineer should possess certain skills and abilities to think out of the box, for the benefit
of society, country, and world.
These are the Essential skills every engineer should have:

1) Think Creative: - it is important to think out of the box or go beyond traditional methods
to help find a solution to existing problems. When thinking creatively people often find
creative solutions which benefit them by providing certain solutions which help
revolutionize the world.
2) Attention to detail: - An engineer requires a keen eye to details. There are certain
situations where because of a small or tiny element which was left unnoticed caused
chaos and destruction. Several big projects have come crashing down, buildings
demolished only because people neglected the importance of detail. A good engineer
should always give equal importance to the big and small parts equally.
3) Communication skills: - engineers do not lack in their technical abilities. They are
comfortable while discussing topics such as coding or news, what they fear the most is
presenting their ideas in a room full of people, even more so they fear to speak, hoping
that they are not confident enough. What engineers always come across is their ability to
convert. Engineers are capable of thinking creatively, they can come up with certain ideas
which could be very beneficial for society. The only point they get stuck at is their ability
to express their ideas it is important to make people understand your perspective. It is
important to make people listen to you and your ideas. An engineer should be able to
persuade clients or customers. They require good sociable skills along with good
communication skills. What is important is for people to understand your ideas and buy
them. It is vital for people to actually look up to you.
4) Quality to lead: - engineers require the ability to interact and persuade different types of
people they also need certain people to do their work. This requires them to make the
people who are below them in hierarchy to do their jobs. Employees or team members
look up to their leaders and are inclined towards their leader for leading them throughout
the entire journey. Leader should be capable to listen to others, be patient and calm and
should come up to certain solutions.
5) Teamwork: - Engineers should know how to work in team apart from their technical
knowledge. While working in a team people come across various others who provide a
different perspective and put their views upfront. Main benefit from teamwork is that the
end result achieved is more accurate and effective. And the work done is much faster. In
team, complex works also get separated among team members so that work load could be
to help find a solution to existing problems. When thinking creatively people often find
creative solutions which benefit them by providing certain solutions which help

Code of ethics: - COE could be described as a document which is circulated in an organization.
COE carry certain standards which help professionals in approaching a certain situation, clients,
and how to handle different problems. It also describes the goals and missions, motives towards
works within an organization. It determines how tasks should be carried out within an
organization by different professionals. Termination could be faced by employees when breaking
any COE. Language used while conversing with the client or with any other colleague or even
with seniors should be polite and humble. Aggressive nature or abusive language is against
values based COE. So in case if any customer or client behaves in an unethical manner or uses
abusive language, professionalism should be to still act politely and ask security to calm the
matter down. Code of ethics makes professional use certain standards while dealing with pears or
clients some of the standards are following integrity, being honest, avoiding conflicting topics.
In engineering industry engineers also need to follow the code of ethics which are already
announced to them within the organization. Being in an organization every employee and senior
management team have to follow those rules, it defines the objective of industry and project. It
also describes how any project should go on in any team. The project should fulfill the objective
of organisation. It should be beneficial to the industry as well as to the client.
In case of lying to others or to other office mates in the business perspective is not allowed
according to the code of ethics, but somewhere it depends upon the situation. A lie should be
helpful to the organization, as well as to the client. It someone forced anyone in the industry to
do so then always ermine the Code of ethics because termination will result in case of breaking
