PERSONAL PROFILE
I am a student in Western Sydney University pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing.
As a student nurse, my professional practice is governed by a number of key attributes. The first
attribute is enthusiasm and compassionate. I possess deep knowledge of professional standards
and a track record of maintaining and protecting sensitive information at all times (Alexander &
Stewart, 2016). Secondly, I am a highly skilled and motivated nursing practitioner (Lyons &
Bliss, 2018). This draws from my exceptional command in clinical assessments, planning,
implementation and evaluation of nursing care with superior emphasis on patient-centred
approach. It is through my academic background in aged care, business administration and
nursing that I have been able to nurture most of my skills listed above. As an assistant nurse in
Shangrila Nursing Home I was awarded the crown of the best employee of the year because of
my dedication to attend to patients. My long term nursing objective is to work in acute care units.
For that matter, I will specialize in the acute care section once I finish my undergraduate
program. As a registered nurse, my career goal is to master the Nursing and Midwifery Board of

CONTINUING PROFFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT (CPD)
In 2015, I completed my certificate iii in aged care where I was equipped with the skills
to take care of the helpless in the society.
I have been an active member whenever health conferences are held in the university. It
is through these conferences that I have learnt critical skills which are very important in
nursing profession.
I will register for short courses like first aid and manual handling of patients in order to
become an all-round nurse
I am planning to register and become a member of New South Wales Nurses Association
which majorly deals with nursing innovations, safe practices in nursing and legislations
(Nagle et al., 2017).
In future, I am planning to enroll for a master’s degree in nursing which will enable me to
explore more about the nursing career
CRITICAL REFLECTION (GIBBS CYCLE)
Description
During my nursing practice in Shangrila Nursing Home in a surgical ward, I was
assigned to a supervisor whose main role was to take care of a sixty-nine year old man. Mr.
Cohen (pseudonym) who had undergone abdominal surgery some few days ago and our role was

to have his wound dressed and cleaned. One of those fine days, I was asked to dress Cohens
wound as the supervisor assessed another patient in the next ward. Just as instructed, I undressed
the wound using a non-touch procedure and washed it (Potter, 2015). After my supervisor
finished with the other patient, he came straight to Mr. Cohen and examined his wound without
washing his hands or wiping the hands with an alcohol gel. Before I could gather enough
courage to question him, it was too late and Mr. Cohen had already been examined.
Feelings
This incident highly alarmed me, because I did not expect a qualified doctor like him to
make such a mistake of failing to observe hand hygiene when examining patients. However, I
felt intimidated by his behavior considering the fact that he was superior for me to question him
and I did not want to embarrass him (Kingston, O'Connell & Dunne, 2016). Later I informed my
mentor who suggested calling the doctor and we discuss the incident together. The doctor was
shocked and admitted to have made the mistake which he attributed to long working hours
without a break.
Evaluation
It was an extremely challenging incident for me which made me regret later because my
failure to challenge the supervisor before he could examine Mr. Cohen. However, I am gland that
the doctor admitted and gave a positive response to my mentor (Kingston, O'Connell & Dunne,
2016). That was a clear signal of responsible doctor. I too learned the importance of acting
assertively on my workmates in sensitive matters so that the well-being of patients can be
safeguarded at all measures.

Analysis
According to NMBA (2018), hand hygiene is very important in reducing cross-infection.
It also emphasizes on the health care workers upholding the standards of hand hygiene to avoid
decontaminating their hands as often as possible (Kingston, O'Connell & Dunne, 2016). The
Australian Department of Health has recently highlighted the likelihood of healthcare workers
spreading infections through uniforms and hence the need to review dressing policies for
healthcare workers. The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia code of professional has also
stated the importance of hand hygiene for nurses to minimize the risk of transmitting infections
from one patient to another.
Conclusion
Reflecting on this incident, I blamed myself for failing to act to ensure that the doctor
cleaned his hands before assessing Mr. Cohen. My inaction during the incident put the life of Mr.
Cohen in risk, which is against the patient-centered care (Kingston, O'Connell & Dunne, 2016).
After the discussion, I realized that I needed to nurture my self-confidence in order to challenge
incidences which put the lives of colleagues into danger.
Action Plan
In my future practices, I will strive to build my assertive skills in my working
environment to ensure that the well-being of patients is prioritized (Kingston, O'Connell &
Dunne, 2016). Nurturing my assertive skills will be my learning goal through discussion with my
mentors to give me some of the strategies to achieve the goal.
