Topic: Barriers in building effective global team: challenges, global leadership and virtual
teams
1. Introduction or overview of the study
In the strategic business environment, firms can attain success only when it has highly
effectual team. With the rise in globalization and to accomplish the motive in relation to gaining
competitive edge over others now business units are placing high level of emphasis on building
teams at global level. The main aim of firm behind building global team is to enhance the level
of operational efficiency level significantly. Moreover, individuals, who reside at different part
of world, have varied skills and abilities in terms of education, value and other competencies.
Thus, by appointing personnel globally at a local workplace firm can meet specified goals and
objectives. In addition to this, through the means of virtual communication system firms can
develop highly skilled and qualified team. However, there are several aspects which in turn
create difficulty in front of business organizations in relation to the development of highly
effective team. Such factors include culture, race, gender, belief, values and educational
diversity. Hence, the present report will shed light on the issues or problems which are facing by
large sized business organizations in building suitable team at global level.

4. Literature review
Literature review may be defined as a process in which researcher critically evaluates the
findings of different researchers. In the section of literature review, scholar presents both positive
and negative aspects which are related to the research topic or issue. Hence, by doing assessment
of several books, journals and scholarly articles related to global team building brief thesis has
been prepared by the researcher.
Theme 1: Global team building and its significance
According to the views of Browne and et.al, (2016) team may be served as a group of
people who make their combined efforts for achieving common goals and objectives. Team
includes individuals who have varied skilled and abilities. In this regard, by developing highly
effectual team firm can attain success to a great extent. However, on the other side, Bhola (2017)
stated that team represents the group of individuals or people who have ability to complete a
specific task or project. Hence, teamwork is highly significant which in turn helps in completing
highly difficult task within the fewer time frames. Aga, Noorderhaven and Vallejo (2016)
depicted in their study that global team building places high level of emphasis on including
individuals belong from different countries. Global team building is highly effectual or
significant which in turn helps in making the pool of skilled or talented personnel. Hence, with
the help of talented personnel firm can meet the goals and objectives to a significant. However, it
is to be critically evaluated by Valori and Johnston (2016) that global team sometimes places
negative impact on organizational productivity due to the lack of having proper co-ordination.
Moreover, cohesiveness and co-ordination are the main aspects of effective team building. Thus,
in the lack of having such aspects
Theme 2: Barriers related to prominent global team building
By doing investigation, Henry and et.al., (2016) found that individuals from different
countries having same nationalities, background, education etc usually perform in a similar way.
However, on the other side, personnel who have varied cultural, nationalities and educational
background act differently in the similar kind of situation. Thus, it is one of the main aspects
which in turn create difficulty in front of the business organizations regarding suitable team
building. However, on the critical note, Bhola (2017) stated that such kind of diversity can easily
be managed by firm through organizing training and development session. Hence, authors clearly

presented in their study that global leadership skills and abilities are highly required among the
individuals to build and leading a team. If individuals do not have ability to lead a team then
business unit would not become able to achieve success in the competitive business environment.
Further, Browne and et.al, (2016) identified virtual teams as one of the main barriers
which in turn create difficulty in the success of global team. Moreover, distant communication
includes wide range of problems rather than face to face. Moreover, in the case of virtual team
communication level is highly affected from technical aspects. In the case of technical errors,
members of team are not in position to communicate with each other. This in turn may result into
delay in performance and thereby accomplishment of project. Hence, all such aspects are
considered as barrier which in turn closely affects the aspects of effective team building.
5. Research questions
In the field of research, scholar is required to develop or frame highly suitable questions
by keeping in mind the aims and objectives. Moreover, research questions provide direction to
the scholar in whole study. Thus, on the basis of research aims following questions have been
framed:
Q.1 What is the significance of global team for different organizations?
Q.2 Which kind of factors act as barrier in the building of competent global team?
6. Research design and methodology
For meeting research aims and objectives scholar will follow below mentioned
methodology:
 Research type: In research, scholar is required to select suitable investigation type which
in turn helps in presenting the suitable and fair view of study. Qualitative and quantitative
are the main two research types which are usually selected by the scholar with the motive
to carry out investigation in the best possible manner (Hodkinson and Macleod, 2010).
Hence, for assessing the barriers which are facing by business units in building highly
effectual and competent team researcher will conduct qualitative investigation. The
rationale behind the selection of such research design is to find out solution by evaluating
the underlying facts and opinion.

 Research approach and philosophy: Approaches and philosophy of research provides
deeper insight about the manner in which researcher needs to gather and analyze data set.
Hence, approaches of research can be distinguished into two types such as inductive and
deductive (Drake and Heath, 2010). Besides this, philosophies of study can also be
presented in terms of interpretivism and positivism. In order to evaluate the barriers
associated with the formulation of effective team in the global context researcher will
employ inductive approach and interpretivism philosophy. The main reasons behind the
selection of such tools that they highly suit to the type of investigation undertaken.
 Data collection: To accomplish research study in the best possible way scholar will
undertake both primary and secondary data source. Hence, researcher will conduct survey
on 30 retail and hospitality industrialists of Australia. For this purpose, researcher will
frame questionnaire by including questions regarding global leadership, barriers in
developing effective team. In addition to this, scholar will also make assessment of
books, journals and scholarly articles that are based on effective team building in the
global context.
 Sampling: By using suitable sampling technique from probabilistic and non-probabilistic
scholar can select suitable sample for the study. Thus, researcher will select 30
industrialists by taking into consideration simple random sampling technique. In such 30
respondents scholar will include industrialists who perform their activities in retail and
hospitality sector. Moreover, growth and success of both such teams are highly affected
from teamwork.
 Analysis: In order to analyze the gathered data set scholar will apply thematic perception
test technique. Hence, by preparing several themes on the basis of questionnaire
regarding barriers in effective team building scholar will present the solution of issue. In
this, scholar will also support findings through the means of literature and graphical
presentation.
 Reliability and validity: For ensuring high level of reliability and validity of research
researcher will consider the following aspects:
ï‚· Use of latest data sources: Published after the period of 2008
 Use of related articles such as barriers related to team management ‘
ï‚· Collection of data from highly authentic websites
Document Page
ï‚· No modification will be done in the information derived from primary investigation
 Ethical considerations: For meeting the ethical aspects researcher will follow the below
mentioned aspects:
ï‚· Taking permission from respondents before initiating survey
ï‚· Inclusion of reference list and doing proper citation of concerned sources
7. Research limitations
In the present study, researcher has selected investigation methods and other tools by
taking into account the issue. However, there are some limitations which prevail in the study that
closely affects the significance of outcomes (Zhang, 2013). To investigate the barriers related to
effective team building only 30 respondents will be considered by the researcher. It is considered
as one of the limitations because researcher would become able to present the fair view of study
only when investigation is focuses on large number of people. However, to respond such
limitation scholar has selected industrialists pertaining to retail and hospitality sector. Moreover,
team working is the vital part of such sectors.
On the other side, time is another major limitation which in turn places high and direct
impact on the effectiveness of research outcomes. Thus, to avoid such limitation and reducing its
impact specific time schedule has been prepared by the researcher (Schmitt, 2010). By following
such chart or plan scholar would become able to meet deadline to a great extent. Besides this,
due to the lack of having enough monetary resources researcher will not undertake SPSS tools
and techniques. However, in order to resolve research issue scholar will conduct qualitative
investigation to find out suitable solution of the problem. According to this, thematic perception
test technique will help in presenting findings in an appropriate manner rather than SPSS. All
these aspects show that researcher has undertaken significant actions to avoid all such
limitations.
8. Time schedule
Research plan or time schedule is highly significant which in turn provides suitable
direction to scholar. Hence, by following specific plan or chart researcher can attain success in
the strategic business environment.
