BACKGROUND OF THE ORGANIZATION
Basildon Maternity hospital is government hospital situated in Mid and South Essex of
United Kingdom. It is established specifically for the mothers and their infants as the name
suggest. As per the google scholar it is operated by NHS Foundation trust. It provides number of
services ranging from initial care assessment along with ambulance facility, prenatal diagnostic
screening, perinatal mental health, antenatal care services and counselling services. Also,
delivery suite, home birth and midwife led birthing unit are some other services added to the
existing ones. In May 2020, an anonymous whistle blower raised concerns about the safety at the
hospital when six incidents occurred at the hospital which involved newly born babies.
ISSUES
Every health care unit or hospital goes through many challenges in the total span of its
existence. Basildon Maternity hospital is no exception to that and the two issues in this hospital
by the google scholar that are as follows:
1. There have been six incidents in which causing risk to the lives of the newly born babies
due to the poor health condition and cooling therapy affecting their health adversely. An
unidentified whistle blower raised the alarm for the same by filing ton the Care Quality
Commission (CQC) by mentioning the risk of safety at the hospital (Dyer, 2020).
Together with this, there have been number of issues related to discrimination made for
the minority black women who were seeking the medical treatment in the hospital. Since,
it is a government hospital, the charges of the services are often low as compared to any
other private institutions. But the way the staff treated minority black women is not at all
soothing to the eyes or peaceful to the mind. Black women have faced the issue of
discrimination at Basildon maternity hospital which is a shameful act that also at a place
which is supposed to be treated every patient equally.
2. Another issue was found about the lack of staff member to look after women patients
leading to improper care and ineffective leadership. There was disagreements between
the health professionals also they lacked in adequate knowledge about proper health care
of the patients. The services were termed as poor that people living in UK lost the trust in
that hospital. Also, they started visiting other hospitals and health care units for obtaining

of the patients. The services were termed as poor that people living in UK lost the trust in
that hospital. Also, they started visiting other hospitals and health care units for obtaining

the treatment. This was a setback in the history of the hospital and shows the lack of
adequate knowledge and skills required to be possessed by the professionals for carrying
our the activities (Simpson, Lyndon and Ruhl, 2016).
CHALLENGES
Challenges are the part of an on going business irrespective of the size, nature etc.
Basildon is government hospital and faced a lot of challenges after number of issues recognized
in the internal functions. Some of the challenges of this hospital have been described underneath:
1. According to the hospital was termed as inadequate to take care of the patients and carry
the health care activities, it ensure to make improvements with the immediate effect
which was a huge task. There was a safety deadline set by the hospital which was
supposed to be met within the time limit as specified by the same organization. In short,
the plan set by the hospital has to be completed with the immediate effect. Also, there
have been discrimination by the staff for some of the patients. This was an outcome of
limited funding at the hospital due to which everything was going out of control. There is
limited financial resources for meeting with the latest requirements by the government
and other parts of the society.
2. As per the google Scholar, the other challenge was to train the professionals with the
latest technology and updated knowledge for making them suitable enough to take of the
patients. Also, it was challenging to appoint good number of staff who are capable and
meet the eligibility criteria of health care professionals. This was required after the six
incidents where the infants’ health condition got worse. There were lack of skilled
workers which made it difficult for the women admitted in the hospital to look for and
have proper care as required by the doctor (Martin, 2015). This often put their health at
risk which even proved to be fatal in some of the cases. The articles published in the
newspaper made it clear about the standing of this organization among other health care
units.
SOLUTION
Solution is an essential part of all the problems as it reduces the costs, time, and make an
organization work effectively. In relation to Basildon maternity hospital, good solutions were
adequate knowledge and skills required to be possessed by the professionals for carrying
our the activities (Simpson, Lyndon and Ruhl, 2016).

required after so many bad incidents happened at the hospital in the past years which gave the
tag of inadequate health care unit.
1. It formulated a guideline dedicated to the safety of the patients which every doctor as
well as nursing staff is required to follow while conducting day to day activities apart
from the critical operations (Carthon, and et. al., 2019). This guideline has been prepared
by taking into consideration the opinions of various staff members and the management
team so that an appropriate guideline can be prepared. This can be possible by increasing
the funding for the hospitals which will allow it to have new tools and machines for
improved conduct of the activities. The fund can be raised from number of sources which
may be internal as well as external depending on the requirement of Basildon maternity
hospital.
2. Another solution found out by the hospital is that an immediate drive for the appointment
of health care professional started for hiring people with skills and talent in the field of
health care. Apart from this, time to time training and meetings were conducted for
enhancing the knowledge of the existing as well as new professionals so that no mistake
in health care of patients occur. This is a good initiative which emphasized in putting on
board only those people who have the experience and skills which can make the health
condition of the patients good. Also, there must be examinations of the staff to test their
knowledge and how they tackle emergency situations (Cho, and et. al.,, 2016).
CONCLUSION
From the above report, it can be concluded that health care units or hospitals should be
capable enough to take good care of its patients since they all come to seek medical treatment
with the hope of getting better with the time. Health and social care is that area of the society for
which hospitals, health care units and camps are established in different locations for providing
health care services. It is important to keep the people healthy and encourage them to lead a good
and healthy life without any diseases or issues (Maeremans and et. al.,2018). This report is
prepared on Basildon Maternity hospital which is a government hospital and based in United
Kingdom. This report includes background information along with issues, challenges and
solutions to such hurdles. There should be proper tools and machines, along with skilled
employees who can perform the difficult tasks as well with ease. Furthermore, there should be
tag of inadequate health care unit.
