1ASSESSMENT USING BATHE SCREENING TOOL
A private or family physician is responsible for the treatment and detection of
psychiatric illnesses and emotional problems. A patient who presents herself/himself with
complaints of insomnia, pain, fatigue and comes to the clinic on a regular basis with same
complaints multiple times has behavioral disorder ("Behavioral Assessment of the General
Medical Patient", 2018). This essay will focus on a diagnosis technique that helps in
behavioral analysis of a patient. The next passage will provide in depth details about BATHE
technique.
BATHE technique is generally an interview technique that provides a complete
assessment of patient in terms of their behavior and symptoms relating to emotion. Life
circumstances of patient are captured appropriately through BATHE technique (McCulloch,
Ramesar & Peterson, 2018). A format SOAP that stands for S-subjective, O-objective, A-
assessment, P- plan is used for collecting and forming the findings in a medical examination
of a patient. An alternative approach, which places focus on behavior, is BATHE technique.
BATHE is an acronym that stands for B-background, A-affect, T-trouble, H-handling and E-
empathy (Akturan et al., 2017). BATHE technique addresses mostly background issues
pertaining to patients and problems troubling them. Then the pattern shifts to how a patient is
handling a particular situation. Lastly, the physician shows empathy towards the patient to
calm him/her down. Now, uses of BATHE technique will be discussed. BATHE technique is
specifically designed to fit into a fifteen-minute window. A private or family physician can
draw out background situation of a particular patient just by asking a simple statement such
as- “Please tell me what is going on in your life.” There is a need to understand what this
statement means. This type of statement invites a particular patient to share his/her concern
and invokes physician’s interest level (Williams et al., 2015). Patient then talks about
potential stresses and life circumstances. There are certain times when a physician can feel
overwhelmed by the information he/she gathers. Therefore, a physician devotes time for

careful listening for several minutes. After that, he/she is able to clarify about a patient’s
emotional state. For a physician, it is very hard for him/her to assume the feeling of a patient
for a particular situation. Therefore, a question like-“How are you feeling about that?” will
yield some unexpected answers (Holden et al., 2014). This question falls under letter ‘A’,
which stands for ‘Affect’ in BATHE. The next question that follows should be something
like this- “What is troubling you the most?” The purpose of this question is to help the patient
focus on the central issue. It provides a benchmark for insight and understanding for both the
physician and the patient. Once, the central cause is identified the physician proceeds with the
next question. Then, physician inquires about handling of the situation by the patient. A
simple statement may be like-“How are you able to handle?” This statement reaffirms the
physicians believe in the patient. The physician at this stage should respect the method
adopted by the patient to deal with the situation. After this, the patient might be interested in
developing a strategy that will help him cope with the situation. Physicians input are critical
in this matter. The development of strategy with the collaboration between the physician and
the patient demonstrates the efficiency of the BATHE technique (Pace et al., 2017). Once the
penultimate step is done, then the physician proceeds with the concluding question. A simple
sentence of it can be- “I can feel your situation or this must be hard for you”. The basis of this
statement is to provide support and understanding. A critical component, which is empathy, is
vital to maintain and establish relationship between physician and patient. Variation is there
in BATHE technique since there is a difference between a talkative patient and a silent
patient. The framework for a talkative patient is little bit different as compared to a silent
patient. Variations are produced within the question however the essence remains the same.
The interview with a person of silent nature proceeds in a similar tone. From, the outer
appearance BATHE technique may seem elementary, but it constitutes elements that are
deemed essential in psychotherapy. Elements include alliance, identification, empathy,

insight and awareness. In short, this particular technique provides discouragement towards
dependency and promotes encouragement towards strategies that are needed to cope with a
particular situation.
This essay concludes on how BATHE technique is used in successful analysis of
behavioral aspect among patients. It can be concluded that the BATHE technique facilitates
information gathering, time constrained evaluation of a patient and effective psychological
assessment. The physician is able to direct patient behavior in a certain direction as
prescribed in the approach BATHE and this gives him the authority to extract other
symptoms pertaining to behavioral disorder of a patient.
