Benefit of writing a book report in English as a second language for Students
Report writing is consider one of the most common and essential skill for students and
writing a book report is another important skills which assist to improve the overall thinking
abilities. Hence, in Malaysia writing is one of the skills required to be mastered especially in
English as a second language. Azis and Puspitasari (2019) stated that natural order of second
language learning is listening, speaking, reading and writing which are consider as advance
stage of language development. That is why, Sholeh (2020) reflected that writing is consider
highly complex process which proves difficult for many second language learners. In all over
the world, it is analyzed that billions of people write and speak English that is why it has
become a second choice of most of the people. Moreover, English in Malaysian educational
context is taught as a second language and is a compulsory subject at all level. So it is stated
that English as ESL will help both student and teacher to enhance their learning. Though
there are many difficulties which a learner face during this activity and there is a need to
solve the problem, but on the other side, there are many advantages as well. Some of them are
as mention below:
Ability to communicate in new language is increases: It is consider one of the
greatest advantage for a learner because writing a book report helps to learning new (English)
language and this creates connections with a wider range of world’s population. If a person
start writing in English then they may easily starting speaking in other language as well.
Sulistiyo and et.al., (2020) share their opinion and stated that due to European roots of
English Language, it share many similarities with German, Latin and French which makes
easier for many speakers to learn the language.
Increase ability in digital literacy: Writing a book report in different language will
helps to quickened mental abilities. As a result, an individual who are multilingual have an
ability to stay up to date with modern technologies. Therefore, it is stated that students who
opt English as a second language will easily cope up with the adverse situation. Hence,
increase mental agility due to language acquisition assist learner to comply with changes.
Brain undergoes to a change: According to Handoyo, Suparno and Suparno (2020)
writing a book report in English is consider another important benefit for student such that it
was believed that change in brain functioning occurred when student obtain high level of
language ability in new language. But this study reflect that change may occur at early stage

and that is why, writing report in English will help individual to learn new things and
increase the ability as well.
Increase problem- solving abilities: A candidate always benefited from language
learning such that increase problem solving abilities in different areas. For example, writing a
book requires abstract, introduction which needs thinking skills, concept formation and
creativity (Teng, 2020). Hence it is stated that learning or writing in second language will
help to increase problem solving skills and this in turn increase multi- tasking abilities among
students as well.
Prevent the deterioration of brain functioning over time: Secondary research reveals
that individual who were multilingual had a decrease rate of 2 to 4 years in the development
of age related cognitive problem. Therefore, writing a book report in English will assist the
students to improve the functioning of brain which will help them to increase ability as well.
As this activity requires lot of attention and skills, that is why, it will assist to improve the
functioning of brain which will benefited to their future as well.
In addition to this, Alfares (2017) also present their views and stated that writing a
book report in English will help to improve the writing, reading and thinking skills. It is so
because this require more understanding to determine the characters more deeply. Thus,
writing a book requires more ability than reading a book. This in turn also help to examine
the strength and weakness of own. Such that with the help of this activity, individual may

As per the recent statistic, there are around 6500 spoken language in the world and
millions of people spoke in English whereas remaining people are non-native speaker of
English. Apart from this, around 85% of the research are also conducted in same language
which is clearly reflected that English is second local language after that regional languages
(Karap, 2017). Apart from this most of the students are also learn English in order to continue

their higher studies in foreign countries, so it is reflected that it become a world class
language for all the people. That is why, most of the teacher promote their students to
increase their reading and writing skills which in turn improve the interpersonal skills as well.
In accordance with Matteson, Arellano and Sherrod (2020) writing is most difficult skill
among four language skills for many learners because of its complexity in spelling and
pronunciation of words in English. That is why, writing a book report is opted which in turn
assist to motivate learners in order to improve their skills.
There are many benefit of effective teaching of writing skills to English as a second
language. As the language is simple to understand while complex in writing and that is why,
teacher should always think of alternative method. Also, use of simple and needful material
for learners also assist to create more interest among learners. Further, there are different
advantage which a learner get while writing as a book report in this language. Such that it
will assist learner to use of figures of speech, idioms and phrase appropriately, this in turn
help to have a good command over vocabulary items and grammatical structure. Pateşan,
Balagiu and Zechia (2016) also supported that it will assist to increase critical thinking skills,
also improve the spelling skills for learner as well. Therefore, with the help of effective
writing in a book will help a students to perform well in their competitive exams. That is

That is why, for effective writing techniques, report writing is consider best method to
improve the overall skills. Moreover, writing is a skill which required constant practice and
teacher should always motivate the learners by introducing different topics. As there are
many techniques available to improve the writing by consider English as a second language
and among all, book report writing is best. Also with the help of note taking, most of the
learners easily improve their skills and this in turn benefit to their future as well. Overall it is
stated that with the help of report writing, a learner improve the writing skills and learn new
language which in turn assist to improve the skills. Moreover with the help of teacher and by
taking guidance from them will help to brainstorming.
In addition to this, it is further examined by Nedungadi, Prabhakaran and Raman
(2017) that there is a need to motivate students to learn in other language because this in turn
leads to improve their abilities and critical thinking abilities that somehow assist them to
organize the given task as well. Therefore, it is examine that with the help of English

Language, most of the learner raise their problem solving skills, as it is not easy to understand
the term and write it on. That is why, with the help of effective writing skills, a student can
easily express their views to others and this in turn increase the relationship with each other.
Hence, schools and Universities are also promote different campaigns and activities in order
to encourage students to learn new language which in turn assist in their future as well.
Overall, it is examine that with the help of different techniques such as report writing,
note taking most of the students improve the results which in turn help in future. The above
mention advantages also reflected that though language is complex to understand but there
are wide scope, so students must understand and learn the same. This is possible with the help
of writing book report which assist to examine current skills (including strength and
weakness) which will further improved as well. It is also proved in the secondary research
that if an individual possesses strong ability and also fit for national examination then the
situation are in favor and this will lead to improve the overall working abilities as well. In
addition to this, it is also analyzed that having knowledge with different language will assist
increase memory capacities and this in turn especially strong in short term memory as well.
Therefore, it is a huge benefit for student because it will allow the brain to keep collecting the
information for longer duration which in turn assist to make them activated.
