3.2 Applying earned value management tool to define and calculate all the starting point
calculation, performance index calculation and the final cost
Earned value management- In this method, various aspects considers such as scope, scheduled
and resources against project actual performance (Fleming and Koppelman, 2016). With help of
this analysis, project manager can show past performance and estimate future efforts to
accomplish the project.
Step 1: The starting point calculations
Description Explanation
Planned value The planned value for the project is $10000 as
project will accomplish within a week
Actual cost This cost based on the time sheet, expenses and
invoices. In this project, actual cost is $9000
Earned value $5500
Calculation detail: In the case, bob was given 20 hours to accomplish 4 subtasks. He estimated
that 60% of subtask are completed. By multiply $2000 by 60%, total given value is $ 1200.
($2,000 * 60%) + ($2,000 * 75%) + ($2,000 * 10%) + ($2,000 * 50%) + ($2,000 * 80%) =
$5500
Thus, it has been estimated that earn value is $5500 so at this point in time, project appears to be
$3500 over budget.
Step 2- The performance index calculations

Thus, it has been estimated that earn value is $5500 so at this point in time, project appears to be
$3500 over budget.
Step 2- The performance index calculations
12

Description Value
Cost performance index ($5500/$9000) = 61.11%
Schedule performance index ($5500/$10000) = 55.0%
On the basis of this calculated result, it has been analysed that John can see his team is
working at an average of 61.11% level of efficiency. On the basis of SPI that is 55%, it has been
found that project will accomplish another week.
Step 3: The final cost estimates
Description Value Notes
Budget at completion $10000 Total original budget of project
Estimate At completion $16,363 $10000/.611 [BAC/CPI]
Estimate to complete $7,363 $16363-$9000 [EAC-AC]
Variance at completion $7363 $10000-$16363 [BAC-EAC]
Cost variance -$3500 $5500-$9000 [EV-AC]
Schedule variance -$4500 $5500-$10000 [EV-PV]
On the basis of overall calculation, it has been analysed that project accomplished in
$6363 over budget. It is impossible to hit original target $10000.Thus, it can be estimated on this
data that programmer of ABC construction company will continue working with project.
