Big data can be defined as the huge amounts of data that is collected and analysed by
various organizations for different purposes. The amounts of data that are being maintained
by the modern organizations are quite large in the modern environment. However, this data is
used by the companies for the purpose of analysing the various trends in the external
environment in an effective manner.
Big data is used by the US state and federal law enforcement agencies for discovering
the patterns that exist in the activities of various criminals. These activities are analysed with
the help of the analysis of correlation with time, the opportunities and the organizations. The
new tools that are used in this process help the organization in analysing the data from a huge
range of sources which include the information that is collected from the internet. The Real
Time Crime Centre data warehouse contains data related to more than 120 million complaints
of the criminals. The search related capabilities of the systems allow the New York Police
Department or the NYPD to obtain the data that they require and take action on these issues
based on their past crimes and their patterns as well (Laudon & Laudon, 2015).
Another organization that uses big data to go green is Vestas. The organization has its
headquarters in Denmark and is the largest organization which operates in the industry of
wind energy production. The areas where wind is not enough, are not able to generate
adequate amounts of electricity. The areas with high amounts of wind can further damage the
turbines to a large extent The organization depends on the data related to the location to
analyse the speed of wind in those areas. Vestas is collects data related to the existing
turbines and then acts on that accordingly.
AutoZone uses big data for the purpose of analysing prices of the products and
inventory in its 5000 stores across the world. The data of the customers are used for the

purpose of creating deals at local levels. Big data is being used by the organizations to
analyse the sentiments of the various customers (Laudon & Laudon, 2015).

Vestas had implemented a solution to create business intelligence with the help of
IBM InfoSphereBigInsights named software which runs on a high performance based
software named iDataPlex server. This technology has helped Vestas to increase the size of
its wind library so that it is able to manage and then analyse the location and data related to
weather which is more precise. The organization can also reduce resolution of the big data
grids by around 90%. The application of business intelligence enables the organization like
Hertz to store all the data in a centralised manner to determine the delays that can occur in the
operations. Google had developed a business intelligence algorithm which was able to
determine the number of people who suffered from influenza with the help of web searches
(Laudon & Laudon, 2015).

The government agencies like the NYPD was able to gain a lot from the analysis of
big data which has enabled the organization to increase opportunities related to the analysis
of the crime rates and patterns. Vestas on the other hand also benefitted from the analysis of
big data as it enabled the company to use the location related data to take care of the turbines.
AutoZone benefitted from the usage of big data as they were able to adjust and decide the
prices of the inventory and the products with the help of this analysis. The sentiment of the
consumers was also analysed in a successful manner with the help of big data that is available
for analysis. The Sears company was able to analyse the data of the customers with the help
of new technologies. This had helped them in creating loyalty programs for the repeat
purchasers. The organizations that were analysed and discussed in the case study were able to

create opportunities for their business with the help of the analysis of big data in a proper
manner. For example, the Sears company was able to analyse the big data and discover its
loyal customer base in the process (Laudon & Laudon, 2015).

The first big decision that was improved with the usage of big data was that taken by
NYPD to analyse the data of the serial criminals with the help of their pattern of committing
crimes on a regular basis. The search based capabilities of big data have been helpful for this
decision taken by the organization. The second decision that has been taken by Vestas
regarding the usage of data to analyse the location based information has also been supported
by big data usage. The third decision that was taken by Sears Holdings to create customer
loyalty has also been improved with the help of the usage of big data. AutoZone had also
taken the decision to create adjust the prices of the inventories and the products which was
helped with big data analysis (Laudon & Laudon, 2015).

The large organizations which operate on a global basis need to analyse big data so
that they are able to manage the operations in international locations. The data related to the
needs and desires of the employees can be analysed by the organizations. The global
companies can take the help of big data to analyse the behaviour of the customers so that they
are able to provide the appropriate services and products. This enables the organization to
address issues of the customers faster than before. The usage of big data helps the companies
to address the various problems and issues of the employees related to the implementation of
