Building Information Modelling (BIM): Now and Beyond
Abstract
Building Information Modelling is a key science and technology which is used
for reshaping Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry (EAC). As a
technology and process, BIM is able to enhance the implementation of project.
Different stakeholders in the projects are able to appreciate the importance of BIM in
project implementation. Using BIM in projects requires focus on core concepts and
the benefits which are retrieved from its application in projects. Moreover, there are
key risks and barriers which are able to be experienced while using the BIM in project
implementation. This paper will be able to focus on the way the BIM is able to
enhance the project implementation and also focus on the key challenges which are
experienced.
Literature review
Building Information Modelling is a key skill and practice used to transform design
construction operation and conceiving of buildings. Architecture-Engineering-
Construction (EAC) industry is able to bring out different stakeholders in project
implementation [1]. All these stakeholders are able to use the BIM in the project
implementation. The BIM is able to give critical insight of facilities including both
physical and functional characteristics [2]. As a process and software, BIM is able to
use 3-D intelligent models in order to make critical changes in the workflow and
different stages of project delivery [3]. Efficiency and harmony during the project
implementation is one vital advantage which the BIM use brings during project
implementation. As a technology, the BIM is able to offer project simulation using the
3D models. This process is able to connect different information and stakeholders
from different areas of project planning, design, construction and operation. BIM
application is able to follow the project life cycle [4]. The use of BIM is subjected to
the same risks and barriers which are experienced during the project implementation.
Moreover, BIM has been enhanced by integrating it with other software such as GIS
as well as 3D laser.
