1FRUITS VS VEGETABLES
Plants products that we consume can be mainly divided into fruits and vegetables.
Everyone has a clear sense of what is a fruit and what is a vegetable. The clearest indication of
which is a fruit and which is a vegetable depends on the idea that whether \it is to be cooked and
eaten or it is to be consumed raw. If seen closely there is not much difference between a tomato
and a guava. Both of these are find in the branches of the trees, they are juicy, they have small
seeds in them. In fact, they can be both eaten raw as well. However, the most common use of
tomato is found in the dishes that are cooked or it is made into sauce, however guava is mainly
consumed raw like all other fruits. Therefore, we perceive guava as a fruit and a tomato as a
vegetable, the main reason is tomato is cooked before it is eaten. Then how can a fruit and
vegetable be differentiated.
There can be mainly three points of difference between a fruit and a vegetable. 1. The
location of the plant part. 2. The function of the plant part. 3. The view of a botanist and a chef.
If the location of the plant part is considered and fruits and vegetables are differentiated
according to that, fruits are mainly found in the branches of the plants, they are found hanging
among the leaves and they are the seed bearing parts of the plants. Whereas any part of the plant,
be it the root of the plant, ort the leaves or any other part including the shoot, if can be
consumable is known as the vegetables. Carrots are for example is a root of the plant or even
potato is found in the root of the plant, but as they are consumable they can be considered as
vegetables. However, no part of the plant other than the seed bearing part can be considered as
fruits.
According to function, the fruits are the reproductive organ of the plant, but the
vegetables which belong to the plants body or the root, may not take part in reproductive process.

The fruits are having seeds inside them and the seeds are the primary parts through which plants
pollinate and reproduce.
The third way in which fruits and vegetables are differentiated is the view of the botanists
and the chefs. Botanists are the scientists dealing with plants, they view any part that has seed in
it as a fruit, whether that is tomato, or brinjal, or apple. However, a chef differentiates according
to the function, texture and taste of the plant part. A savory, sweet, plant part that can be used in
the cooking to increase the taste of the dish can be termed as a vegetable as per the chefs. Fruits
and vegetables are naturally all parts of the plant, human perception depending on the nature of
consumption differentiate them. Fruits and vegetable are sources of all kinds of vitamins and
minerals and should be consumed regularly.
