AI Summary
This research project delves into the realm of biometrics for authentication, highlighting the security and privacy implications of this increasingly prevalent technology. Biometric systems, operating in either identification or verification mode, offer enhanced convenience and security compared to traditional personal recognition methods. However, they are not without their challenges, including circumvention, repudiation, and denial-of-service attacks. The project emphasizes the user-centered nature of biometrics and its wide-ranging applications in law enforcement, healthcare, IT systems, workforce management, market analysis, and banking. The selection of this research area is justified by its significant impact across various sectors and its potential for future advancements. References to relevant IEEE publications are included to support the research.

Title
Biometrics for authentication: security and privacy implications
Abstract
Biometrics offers greater convenience and security when compared to the personal recognition
method which is known as the traditional approach. It is a widespread technology which is based
on behavioural or physiological characteristics. Based on the context of application a biometric
system operates in any of two modes be it identification or verification. In the mode of
verification, the system authenticates personnel by comparing individual biometric template to
the collected biometric characteristic. In the mode of identification, the system authenticates
personnel by finding the whole template database for a match (Prabhakar, Pankanti & Jain,
2009).
There are some security challenges with Biometric and these include, Circumvention which
highlights problem when any intruder might get access to protected information and the
modification can be made to sensitive data. Another problem is Repudiation when any legitimate
user after accessing the application can claim that some intruder might have done that. The third
problem is DoS (Denial of Service) which occurs when a server is flooded with a huge number
of bogust requests preventing processing of valid requests (Jain, Ross & Uludag, 2005).
I have selected Biometrics for authentication: security and privacy implications as my research
area because it is a user-centred approach and is used in various fields. This Biometric is useful
in Law enforcement, Healthcare, IT system, Workforce management, Market analysis, Banking
and many other areas. It has set its impact in distinguished areas and thus has much scope of
improvement.
