Introduction
The study is on the aviation industry which includes the air travel and related activities of
the air line industry, military aviation, aircraft manufacturing etc. The term is related to the
mechanical air transportation(Dalland 2017). It includes two types of aircraft are aeroplanes and
helicopters. Airline business are used for providing the services to the people. In the globalisation
the aviation industry is very important in contributing to the economic prosperity and helps in
connection with different countries, cultures, continents etc. The study includes the audit of three
international airports, SWOT analysis of Birmingham airport and providing the recommendation for
airport to enhancing the passenger experience.
Main body
Question 1
Three international airport and comparison
1. London city airport- It is an international airport situated in royal docks in London
borough of Newham, London. The first proposal was developed by Reg Ward in 1981and
Engineering company Mowlem established the airport in 1987. It has 1508-metre(4948ft)
long runway with one terminal. The facilities and services provided by the airport are
information desk located near the entrance terminal, cashpoint services, bank facility
shopping, eating restaurants such as meridian line restaurants, bewleys, trattoria. The airport
operates 4.8 million passengers in 2019. It includes British airways, Lufthansa, Alitalia
airlines which fly from the London city airport. Parking facility is available with the set rate
for 24 hours and rate can be reduced by pre booking through online.
2. London Gatwick airport-It is the second largest airport running with single runway. This
airport is located near the Crawley, west Sussex, England in south of central London. The
airport was opened as an aerodrome in late 1920s. In 1933 commercial flights were
approved by the air ministry. The first terminal was built in 1935 by the name of “The
Beehive”. It includes the north and south terminal. The facilities provides to the passenger
are free Wi-Fi connection, special assistance, luggage services, helps in finding lost
property. Due to COVID all the flights are operated from north terminal. The government is
providing the facilities of testing and quarantine to the passengers. It serves for 35 million
customers with 200 destinations in 90 countries (Jugl and et. al., 2019).
3. Birmingham airport- It is an international airport settled in west - Northwest of Bickenhill,
village Solihull, united kingdom. It was opened on 8 July 1939 as Elmdon airport. It

combines the two terminal through millennium link with the gate 1-20 in first terminal and
other gates to second terminal. The central security area and restaurants are on first floor. It
provides various facilities of special assistance which is directed by OCS Ltd, travelling
facility with children and families, providing smoking area outside the terminal, meeting
rooms, faith prayers rooms and aircraft view area. 140 charter routes and direct schedule is
provided by Birmingham. It also has more than 300 additional connections worldwide.
Question 2
SWOT Analysis of Birmingham Airport
It includes the strength, weakness , opportunities and threats which gives the insights of
airport in contributing the goals. It is a strategic planing tool which is used by Birmingham airport.
It provides valuable information about the industry (Kim and et. al., 2020).
Strength
It has highly skilled members by providing the training and motivation.
The execution of the project is successful by developing new revenues and capital
expenditure is generated.
It leads to high customer satisfaction by maintaining good relations with passengers.
High brand value and reputation.
Increase in number of international and domestic passengers which leads to increase in
income.
Weakness-
It requires a huge cost in infrastructural development which develops the slow growth as it
requires huge geographic area for infrastructure and lacks the parking area for the
passengers.
The miss of flight of the passenger lacks the loss of their income as proper direction of
timing is sometime is not provided for departure and arrivals.
There is requirement of huge capital outlay for running the aircraft
It finds the difficulty in competing with the others due to low fares (Zhengning and et. al.,
2020).

There is a expected investment in the industry as number of stakeholders are ready for the

investment in the air travel due to the growing sector and economy.
To attract more passengers various deals are provided and attractive fare packages are
developed and providing the new products and services.
Operation cost is minimised due to the technological advancement and investment in IT
sectors customers gets the benefit of online payment for the flights through internet and
access the information through various website.
There is an opportunity for the expansion of the industry in geographic area (Ronell 2020).
Threats
The threat faced by the airline is down turn in the economy which leads to less people prefer
for travelling.
Intervention of the government and there legislation results in high cost for the adherence.
There is a threat of environmental change such as storm, lighting, which results change in
flight schedule and delays.
The terrorist attack also threaten the airlines which results in loss of customers.
Increase in fuel prices also threaten the airlines as industry should maintain reserves for its
own fuel to eliminate the threat whenever necessary.
Question 3
Recommendations and Strategies of Birmingham airport
The travellers want pleasing and awful experience as it increases the standards of travelling
industry by exploring new places. Technology is helping in great way for meeting the customers
expectations. The recommendations is provided to the passenger while travelling regarding the hand
luggage, checking the passport, providing travel insurance, and security advice. The workers should
provided the service with the smile and should behave politely. The airport should provide the
quality stores and recognised brands of restaurant which will improve the choices of availability and
increases the customer satisfaction through quality check. The airport staff should take the feedback
and reviews from the passengers for understanding the customer thinking. All the updates regarding
the flights, timing, arrivals and departures, delays should be given to the passenger and to be
updated on websites. It is must for the airport to provide hygiene, waiting rooms, clean and
sanitized wash rooms for attracting the more passengers (Kishi 2017).
Various strategies were developed by the Birmingham airport for the enhancement of
passenger such as in June 2019 master plan 2018 was adopted to meet the demand and for

improving the efficiency of the airlines it launched with the title of “The Midlands gateway to the
world”. It already provides the great services to the passengers and act as a economic accelerator.
The strategy was developed for the growth of economic and job creation and provides the
connectivity to the business for trade, export and investment(Lala and et. al., 2020).
The other strategy was launched by the airport is surface access strategy 2018-23 which sets
a framework for the development of surface areas. It reviews and make arrangements and sets new
challenging modals for the future. It also states the policies with detailed action plans for achieving
future targets.
Conclusion
The study provides the conclusion regarding the airlines as it provides various services and
facilities to the passenger. The Birmingham airport was used by royal air force and royal navy.
Various strategies were developed by the airport for improving the experience of passengers. It
provides the parking area and taxi services. It also develops the framework for the sustainable
development and to meet the demand. There is focus on the long term vision by developing various
policies. Swot analysis of the Birmingham airport provides the vast information about the coming
threats and measures to overcome.
