Introduction
Telstra Corporation Limited (Telstra) is the largest telecommunications organization based in
Melbourne of Australia. It was founded on 1st July in the year 1975 and its present CEO is Andy
Penn. The firm deals with the telecommunications networks and markets voice, mobile, internet
access, pay television and other products and facilities. The article will evaluate the internal
communication issues of employee engagement due to the rise in globalization and millennials
workforce. The purpose of the paper is to discuss the four themes connected with issues of
business internal communication and suggest some recommendations to solve the issues of the
company to engage with the employees.
Discussion
With increasing globalization and a largely millennial workforce, one of the most pressing
internal communication challenges that companies face is reaching and engaging with their
employees.
Theme 1 – Increasing Globalization
Telstra is the largest telecommunication company in Australia with its operations all over
Australia. The increasing globalization of business has created opportunities for Telstra in
extending its range of international operations. The Telstra has set up the offices of sales and
services in 10 nations of Asia, the USA, and the UK to deliver the facilities of
telecommunications to the multinational companies and exporter clients (Nikić, Mitrović, &
Travica, 2014). It has also set up its branches in the UK and New Zealand. In the year 1994,
WorldPartners Association, an international telecommunications corporation, was joined by
Telstra as a non-equity partner to increase its capability to give smooth delivery of the goods and
facilities to the international companies. The Telstra is taking part in the fast development in the
areas of Asia- Pacific through its exporting capabilities by investing in the target markets of local
telecommunications. The Telstra is aiming four regions of Asia-Pacific; Vietnam, Cambodia and
Laos, South Asia specifically Sri Lanka and India, Indonesia and China (Mishra, Boynton &
Mishra, 2014). Though this investment is smaller considering its large base assets, they believe
that its existences in the areas of Asia-Pacific will build the foundation for its investment in the
future.

Theme 2 – Largely Millennial Workforce
The millennials or Gen Y are those peoples who have taken birth between the year 1981 and
1997. The way to know and conduct survey across this generation can be done by the use of
latest technology. This is their process to receive global knowledge and exchange their private
relations and public identities. The process of utilizing technology by the millennials has an
important effect on the companies and the government. A survey has revealed that they spend
almost eight hours per day on utilizing the technology (Karanges, Johnston, Beatson & Ling,
2015). This fact reaches to nearly ten hours while multitasking like utilizing social networking
sites and watching Netflix together. The mobile phones and social networking sites are the
centers of technological experience of the millennials. They do not like to make and receive
calls, but they are always happy to utilize the mobile phones for every other thing except voice
calls. Most of them begin and finish their day by utilizing social media (Jacobs, Yu & Chavez,
2016). With the development of the digital technology, their increasing usage with the
smartphones and the higher ratios of the millennials using smartphones, it is logical for Telstra to
select mobile and social media as a preferred medium to target the millennials.
Theme 3 – Internal Communication Challenges
The internal communication impacts the involvement of the staffs and could improve the
performance of the Telstra. Most of the organization like Telstra struggle to identify the
importance of internal communications and its problems for the improvement of the staffs and
the organization. The managers play important role in determining the internal communications
in the company (Men, 2014). They have to establish equal structures for the communication and
lead by example. If the staffs do not have a structure for efficient communication, they would not
be active in their tasks. The managers and their team members both have to act so that the
appropriate information could reach to the required persons. The mobile workforce is the most
vital internal communication issues faced by the organizations in reaching to the staffs. Proper
technology could solve this issue. The staffs, especially the millennials always expect
communication by smartphones and this could be helpful for involving them (Men & Stacks,
2014). An efficient internal communication plan has to made and involve at least one method to
permit the staffs to easily utilize the method.

Theme 4 – Reaching and Engaging with the Employees
At present one of the most major issues of internal communication is to reach and engage with
the employees of the company. The employee engagement is a global problem not only in
Telstra. At Telstra, only 45% of the staffs are actively involved with their work, and more than
twice the number of staffs are totally non-engaged, toxic or negatively influencing others (Kang
& Sung, 2017). The lack of efficient communication Telstra has always been an issue for the
company. Although the communication exchange has vastly developed by technology, the
problem still remains within the organization. The HR leaders of the company believe that they
do not have sufficient leadership qualities to compel and engage the staffs of the company
(Slack, Corlett & Morris, 2015).

Conclusion
The paper analyzed the four themes connected with the internal communications challenges of
Telstra in reaching and engaging with the staffs. The four themes are increasing globalization,
largely millennial workforce, internal communication challenges and reaching and engaging with
the employees. The Telstra had focused on the growth of higher international networks capacity
due to increasing globalization. The use of technology by the millennials has a vital effect on the
companies and the government. The report had also recommended some solutions for the
employee engagement problems.
Recommendations
The managers and the employers have to make sure that the communication with the
staffs and the team members are clear and done regularly. The communication networks
needed to be accessible by all and by various means. The employers could no longer
depend only on emails for communicating with the employees. There are various other
ways like the social networking sites and many other applications for interacting with the
staffs.
The feedback from the team members is an important part in engaging the staffs. The
managers have to realize the needs of their team members so that the staffs are more
involved in their work. The good and bad feedback both are significant for the staffs and
the managers and the employers.
