concept of social media as a communication tool which will help in understanding and analyzing
the importance of social media. Further the discussion is carried out discussing the role of social
media in context of the company chosen. It will highlight the importance of digital
communication in the workplace as an effective tool to communicate. Recommendations are
given for using the social media in effective and efficient way. By using social media policy,
effective methods or strategies for proper use of social media sites by the employees is discussed.
The recommendations will help the company in using the social media in such a way that will
facilitate the organization in achieving goals in efficient manner in the long run. At the end of the
report, conclusion is given based on the analysis of whole report which helps in assessing the
significance of the social media in today’s business environment.

Concept of Social Media
Social media is a computer based technology which facilitates the sharing of ideas,
information and the building of network among people. Social media grow as an effective
communication tool to communicate better with different members at the workplace. Now a
days, almost every organization using social media to share information regarding changes in
policies, change in rules and regulation, to inform employees regarding changing expectations as
well as changing consumer trends. It is a tool which is created for visitors to upload and
download information (Vaast & Kaganer, 2013). It brings continuity in the work by providing
easy access to the employees at any time. It facilitates in gathering information which are useful
to solve work problems. Social media has great potential to create a sense of belonging in the
workplace and provide affirmation for employees as well as business partners (Nielsen &
Schrøder, 2014).
Use of social media at Cotton On
Cotton On uses Yammer to communicate internally with its employees. Yammer is an
application from which Cotton On share their information on local team board, company wide
board as well as for individual project groups. The use of Yammer updates the employees
regarding important matter which is necessary for them to know.

This private hub in Cotton On is mainly used for engaging people. It Improves employee

and decision can be taken quickly (Sharp, 2016). Sometimes, employees post such information
which company is not prepared to post, which leak the information of the company. To control
this, company should make strictly announcement not to make every announcement publicly

In order to remove the misuse of social media, company should prepare a social media policy
which set the guidelines and expectations for employees which helps the company on getting
benefits from this policy while removing damages that it can cause.
