THE USE OF BLOCKCHAIN IN EDUCATION INDUSTRY 2
The Use of Blockchain Technology for Protection in Education
Blockchain is a technology which is mainly known for creating cryptocurrency and
bitcoin by maintenance of distributed ledger which are immutable in thousands of nodes (Chen,
Xu, Lu, & Chen, 2018). Many people have known that blockchain is only used in financial
sectors. The technology was meant to be used as a public transaction ledger of bitcoins, however,
it has become an essential alternative in the digital error. The capabilities of blockchain are not
only limited to financial transactions and bitcoin now a days. It has also extended to various
sectors like health, education among others. This has precipitated the need to examine the use of
blockchain technology in other sectors. In this rationale, this document is intended to explore the
use of blockchain technology in the education domain.
The blockchain technology can be used in the education industry especially in the higher
institutions and even in publishing industries. In the higher institution, blockchain can be used
for collecting data, credits as well as qualifications among other potential uses in a way that is
more secure and transparent. The technology can be implemented in various sub-sectors in
education industry.
The technology can be leveraged in the higher institutions offering project based training
to develop certificates which are tamper proof for learners. By this, the blockchain database will
generate a unique decentralized number for the encrypted certificate with a two factor
authentication, this may be used by relevant authorities for authentication purposes (Albeanu,
2017). As a result, nobody will be able to forge a certificate or use a certificate which is not
authenticated. The technology have been adopted by a few international education institutions in
order to ensure security and authenticity within the systems.

Another area that the technology is mostly applied is in learning platforms. Through
blockchain technology, students can have a platform from which they can access online training
(Chen, Xu, Lu, & Chen, 2018; Ocheja, Flanagan, B., & Ogata, 2018). The technology is capable
of establishing independent learning platform between a tutor and a student as well as the terms
and conditions that are involved in training including duration, fees, and tasks/projects which
could be agreed upon easily by the tutor and the student which are then stored in the blockchain
database as smart contract. By this, a middle man that may appear in between and make money
is eliminated.
Most importantly, in most higher education institutions, organizations employees
including instructors among other employees work in contract. As such, there is need for a more
secure and transparent contract. Blockchain technology is applied in this sector to keep track of
the achievements of the organization’s employees in a way that is transparent and secure for both
parties. This can also be leveraged by the employees to display to his or her prospect employer.
To sum up, this document has examined the use of blockchain in the education sector.
Notably, leveraging the technology has promising benefits for all parties. The technology has
potential to enhance security and transparency in institutions leading to good relationship
between corporates and individuals or between individuals and their colleagues.
