INTRODUCTION
This study is based on a case of Bluebird home, aged care facility where employees
including nurses, doctors and other healthcare providers are facing problems due to lack of
integration, duplication of patients’ data May & et.al. (2018). This study will discuss
effectiveness of adapting changes and having improved team at workplace in improving quality
of care.
MAIN BODY
Lewin’s change theory to analyse case of Bluebird Home
In regard to Bluebird home, aged care facility where all staff and facility provides care for
around 100 aged residents, found that all healthcare providers are facing some problems due to
lack of integration. From analysis it is found that for each age resident all healthcare providers
maintain 6 types of documents or folders such as: a medication folder, an allied health folder, a
wound care folder, a nursing notes folder and a medical notes folder and a care plan folder. But it
is becoming difficult to manage all different types of documents or folder and accordingly there
is requirement of maintaining around 500 folders in all. So, due to lack of integration all
members are facing problems so, The Director of Nursing asked to senior registered nurse, Sam
regarding this and asked her to bring some ideas and solution (Hussain, S. T. & et.al. (2018). As
per the discussion with friend of another aged care, he decided to merge all folders in one. But
after this also, nurses became angry and said that they have to wait for hours until others had
finished with record. So, there is a lack of acceptance and flexibility among all members
regarding accepting this new change. So, with the help of Lewin’s theory of change, this change
made by Sam can be implemented successful such as:
Unfreezing: It is the stage of change management where The Director of Nursing needs to
prepare of all its members including: nurses, doctors, healthcare providers and others to accept
new change Coghlan, (2021). For making this stage successful, it is important to make all
members aware and to know that why existing way of performing functions of accessing data
can create problems along with benefits that they can get by using merger folders. But making
members aware and preparing them for adapting change is a critical task and here team building
principle of leadership can work out in better manner De Brún, A., O’Donovan, R., &

McAuliffe, E. (2019). It is believed that an improved team can help the director of nursing in
improving relations and influencing all members to adapt changes.
This stage is the most critical and difficult but some principles of leadership can help
director of nursing of Bluebird home to make this stage successful and supporting Sam in
implementing new change at workplace. Along with team building or allotting works in team,
director of nursing and Sam need to develop workplace culture. As per this principle of
leadership, employees and healthcare providers find easier in improving their performance as
improved culture allows them to communicate with each other and solve problems that they are
facing Aij & Rapsaniotis, (2017). So, as per this stage of ready to change, the director of Nursing
can implement change that Sam has made and it can decrease problem of duplication of data and
excessive time of analyzing different folders.
Change: After making able to all members regarding accepting change or not resisting
change for improving quality of care, in this stage, change is being implemented. In this stage, all
members are asked to solve their uncertainties and accordingly all members start to believe that
implemented change will help them out in improving performance and they start to act in new
ways. It is also critical and time consuming stage because people take time in performing
functions as per the new ways and here, nurses, doctors need to make use of merged folders of
all aged clients rather than analyzing individual folders, so, there is requirement for Sam and the
director of nursing to motivate all members Hargett & et.al. (2017). Principle of leadership to
motivate employees can make this stage successful as by providing rewards, appraisal on the
basis of improved performance of doctors with new ways of performing functions, changes can
be implemented. When people receive rewards on the basis of their performance then they are
more likely to focus on their work and try to improve productivity. So, by focusing on this
principle, problems of lack of lack of integration at workplace of Bluebird home can be
decreased. Time and continuous communication is also main key of successful implementation
of change so accordingly, Sam can focus on improving workplace culture for improving
communication as it is another main principle of leadership Tracy, (2020).
Refreeze: When changes have been implemented and people have embraced with new ways
of performing functions then company reaches to this stage. In this stage, leaders need to make
sure that changes are at place and workers are working as per the changes, implemented and for
that they need to support employees for making them feel valued and motivated. Here, the

director of nursing of Bluebird home, aged care and Sam can focus on implementing emotional
intelligence as one of the best principle of leadership Pawar & Charak, (2017). As per this
principle, all employees are asked to self regulate and self motivate in order to improve function
as per the new way or changes of accessing or analyzing all merged folders of aged people. It is
also important for the director of nursing to have empathy and making all employees feel valued
and recognized. By understanding their needs and providing support at all stages where they
need to perform functions as per the new changes, goals of implementing change can be
accomplished Miao, Humphrey & Qian, (2018)
CONCLUSION
It has been summarized from the above study that having adaptability or flexibility skill
among healthcare providers and all employees is vital. It makes them able to adapt changes in an
effective manner and performing functions accordingly. Further, it has discussed effectiveness of
an improved team, motivation to employees and an improved workplace culture for better results
and implementing changes in workplace.
